The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing is seeking an On-site Sr. Research Program Coordinator II for research and capacity building projects on the Fort Belknap Reservation. The On-site Coordinator will work across mental health research projects that cover topics including suicide and substance use prevention, trauma, and others as they arise. The On-site Coordinator will also support the development and implementation of a nursing, public health and STEM pathways program for Native American high school students. In collaboration with an engaged research team based in Baltimore and on the Fort Belknap Reservation, On-site Coordinator will ensure study ethical requirements, protocols, and policies are followed throughout project implementation. A major focus of this role is building collaboration with local organizations and community members, which is key to successful research partnerships.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serving as an On-site Coordinator for reservation-based study implementing community-based participatory research and training projects for Native American youth, scholars, nurses, families, and adults.
  • Assist with drafting research protocols (research plans, consent/recruitment materials and assessments) with a focus on reviewing for feasibility and acceptability within the Fort Belknap context.
  • Create and maintain documents as directed by the PI and research coordinator (consent forms, participant documents, tracking logs).
  • Provide training for study staff related to data collection, including best practices, community guidelines, recruitment, human subjects protection, confidentiality, informed consent, and program protocol for reservation-based study staff.
  • Assist study coordinator with reporting requirements to various funding agencies and IRBs.
  • Track timelines, recruitment progress, gift cards, and on-site study spending.
  • Conducting weekly conference calls and daily individual phone calls with off-site study team members to monitor study progress.
  • Provide updates on current progress of the study as requested.
  • Travel throughout the Fort Belknap Reservation to build and maintain relationships with tribal organizations, schools, and community members and leaders.
  • Participate in all aspects of community-based participatory research, including capacity building, gathering input from the community, recruiting study participants, collecting data from study participants, working with community champions, and working with community vendors.
  • Represent associated projects at conferences.
  • With assistance of PI and research coordinator, lead coordination of Tribal Advisory Board meetings for multiple projects.
  • Serve as the onsite study team representative to Fort Belknap Community Council; Fort Belknap Tribal Health and public health nursing; Aaniiih Nakoda College; and partners.
  • Lead on-site processes needed for grant collaboration with Fort Belknap Tribal Health including invoice preparation and tracking, travel, purchasing, contract approval, and budget approvals.
  • Provide on-site supervision to research assistants as needed.
  • Traveling to Baltimore for team meetings and training, as allowed by COVID-19 precautions.


Work Closely With The Research Team On The Development And Adaptation Of Interventions

  • Work with Tribal partners to adapt research materials for cultural relevance.
  • Partner with study research coordinator to develop associated materials including policies and procedures manuals, train-the-trainers manuals, reference manuals and bibliography, activity binders, trainee binders, participant workbooks, and other training materials (i.e. handouts, presentations).
  • Train field staff in research methods and on safe and respectful research with tribes.
  • Conduct regular quality assurance on all research activities.

Assist With Program Planning And Publication Writing

  • Assisting with preparation and writing of federally- and foundation-funded grants, with a focus on meeting Fort Belknap Tribes requirements, including Tribal Resolutions.
  • Assisting with writing required grant and IRB reports.
  • Assisting with preparation of presentations for conferences and writing of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.

Data Management And Program Evaluation

  • Assisting with review and update of data related to quality assurance procedures.
  • Assisting study coordinator with preliminary program evaluation reports.
  • Tracking and reporting adverse events.

  • Ability to travel as needed to Baltimore research sites, including overnight trips for extended days. Some evening, weekend, and holiday work will be required.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline. Related Master's preferred.
  • Five years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with Native American populations.
  • Experience working with the Fort Belknap Indian Community.
  • Experience working in rural and remote reservation settings.
  • A master’s Degree in public health, nursing or related discipline.
  • Research experience in nursing, public or mental health.
