Job Summary:
The Director of Counseling is responsible for the overall administration, strategic leadership, and coordination of the center and its counseling activities. These general responsibilities are: To plan, develop, organize, and implement the Counseling Services program; to administer individual and group counseling functions; to administer staff and student training and development activities; to develop and implement co-­curricular activities and programs connected to student development. The Director creates, updates, and implements the philosophy and policies of the Counseling Services operation.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Assess students’ mental health concerns; when warranted, facilitate emergency petition.
  • Develop and evaluate appropriate culturally responsive treatment/ intervention plans, including referrals, to improve students’ self-efficacy, coping skills, resilience, and overall mental health.
  • Maintain sensitivity to and promote departmental practices responsive to a diverse student clientele.
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction, including coordination, recruitment training, supervision, development, and evaluation of professional and support staff members.
  • Responsible for preparation, justification, and administration of the budget.
  • Represent the Counseling Center in campus-wide emergencies with a mental health dimension. Offer clinical and systems consultation, intervention, and support.
  • Coordinate and conduct individual counseling sessions with students.
  • Contribute to university policy formation and program development, particularly when understanding the reactions to stress situations ( crisis management) and personal problems.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain the outreach program at the Counseling Center. Create, coordinate, and conduct outreach efforts to raise awareness about relevant mental health topics (suicide, stress management, etc.,) Conduct training seminars for faculty, staff, and students focusing on relevant mental health topics. Assess the efficacy of interventions and programming.
  • Evaluate and monitor Counseling Services programs and service delivery.
  • Oversee training and advisory services to student groups and paraprofessionals.
  • Submit written reports and documents about Counseling Services.
  • Oversee departmental human resource functions and processes.
  • Participate in professional associations, activities,. and networks to maintain knowledge of and influence the institutional, divisional community, industry practices, standards, and trends.
  • Participate in targeted programs for students (e.g., admissions open houses and student orientations).
  • Oversee the campus food pantry and BAT (Behavioral Assessment Team) efforts. Other committee services as needed.
Required Qualifications

Education:
  • Master’s Degree is required in Counseling or Psychology Social work, or related field is required
  • Doctorate preferred.
Experience:
  • Licensed or licensed eligible in Maryland at the time of hire. Suppose license eligible must complete licensure within six months of start.
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • A thorough knowledge of counseling theory and practice.
  • Crisis intervention skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Proficiency with technology and experience with PeopleSoft, Titanium, College Online Screening, etc.
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis and prepare reports.
  • Possess strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make decisions.
  • Ability to network, interact and support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals, Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects, research, and gather information.
  • Possess strong oral and written communication, presentation, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills and have experience working with a socioeconomically diverse student population.
  • Ability to respond to issues with an appropriate sense of urgency.
  • Ability to manage confidential information.
Preferred Qualifications

Conditions of Employment

Maintain regular attendance and closely follows office reporting policies and procedures. The director must be flexible in terms of working after normal work hours on occasions when the job tasks require; travel as needed.
