This position is located in Chattanooga Tennessee.

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the general direction of the Assistant Dean of Well-being, the counselor works with a diverse medical resident, student and faculty population for the university community. Emphasizes harm and risk reduction, prevention and appropriate responses to clients with concerning detrimental behaviors. Designs, coordinates, and implements behavioral health prevention initiatives for the university community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

1. Conducts individual counseling and behavior modification interventions department guidelines and professional/ethical standards.
2. Develops and implements appropriate educational materials to complement interventions.
3. Facilitates psychoeducational and processes orientated counseling groups, including but not limited to judicial referral groups.
4. Provides culturally responsive services to underserved populations (e.g., students from racial and ethnic minority groups, students with LGBTQA+ identities, students who identify as Veterans, including prevention of suicide, sexual assault, use/misuse of alcohol and other drugs and general mental health counseling).
5. Consults with residency program directors, faculty, and staff regarding general mental health related questions, concerns, interventions, and referrals.
6. Provides urgent and crisis response services. Handles walk-in crisis services and after-hours/weekend on-call coverage. Responds to emergencies in a timely manner.
7. Develop and implement a variety of paraprofessional and professional trainings, programs, presentations and workshops for the university community on various mental health and wellness topics (e.g., depression, anxiety, burn-out, substance abuse and suicide prevention, sexual assault prevention, self-care, adjustment, sleep, mental/emotional well-being, etc.)
8. Facilitate workshops and trainings with university staff. Plan events, develop, present and evaluate materials for constituency's specific needs and goals.
9. Facilitate, support and engage in university wellness outreach programs, trainings and activities.
10. Work collaboratively with GME leaders, the campus and other entities to promote campus wide wellness and safety.
11. Work jointly with the Asst Dean of Wellness and the Assoc Dean of Academic Affairs Director to coordinate prevention and outreach (e.g., depression, anxiety, burn-out, substance abuse and suicide prevention, sexual assault prevention, self-care, adjustment, sleep, mental/emotional well-being, eating disorders, coping skills, etc.)
12. Provide mental health evaluation and assessment of university personnel with special attention to substance abuse when warranted.
13. Respond to emergency situations in a timely manner.
14. Provide timely documentation of clinical findings regarding residents and communicate with identified university constituents within HIPPA guidelines
15. Provide life skills assessments and strategies to students, residents and faculty.
16. Provide test taking assessments and strategies to students, residents and faculty Triage, when necessary, to determine whether performance/behavioral issues are arising from mental health or substance abuse as part of a requested performance evaluation.
17. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in Counseling or a closely related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: Three (3) year of experience related experience to include providing suicide and sexual assault prevention, education, and treatment.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Licensed or license-eligible within one (1) years as a mental health provider in the state of Tennessee. (COPY OF LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

• Demonstrated knowledge of and excellence in assessments, motivational interviewing, and other harm reduction/supportive approaches to treatment is preferred.
• Successful ability to work with students from traditionally diverse groups.
• Ability to commit to equity and inclusivity.
• Excellent human relation and communication skills: Showing ability to work with diverse populations.
• Demonstrated knowledge of current alcohol and other drug issues affecting health science graduate/professional students and specific higher risk groups (e.g., LGBTQA, Student Veterans, other diverse groups).
• Ability to work in alignment with the mission, vision, and strategic plan of UTHSC and co-curricular learning outcomes.
• Ability to facilitate meetings and groups, coach, and mentor students.
• Ability to establish and maintain a level of confidentiality congruent with the policies of the University and governing ethical bodies.
• Experience and skill in the design and implementation of training events and programs.
• Ability to respond to urgent and/or crises.

WORK SCHEDULE : This position may be occasionally required to work evenings and weekends.
