Assistant Professor Position  

 

Description

Starr King School for the Ministry (SKSM), a Unitarian Universalist and multi-religious graduate theological school preparing spiritual leaders for ministries of compassion and sacred social change since 1904, invites applications for a full-time core faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, beginning August 2023. While SKSM campus is in Oakland, California, the position does not require or entail relocation. SKSM offers the Master of Divinity and the MA in Social Change, and several specialized certificates. 

Candidates for the position will have a Ph.D. or equivalent academic degree in Practical Theology and/or Trauma and healing studies, with a specialization in at least one of the following areas: Womanist theologies, Black Studies, African Indigenous Traditions, Indigenous Traditions. The cover letter should also indicate scholarly and teaching competence in any other areas relevant to theological education. 

The teaching load is four courses a year, including semester-length courses in the Fall and Spring terms and intensive courses in August and/or January. 

Qualifications

Faculty with exceptional records in online and hybrid teaching will be preferred. The successful candidate will also be expected to work collegially and inter-disciplinarily, advise students, direct independent studies, contribute to the work of the SKSM Faculty and to the scholarship in their area of expertise. 

Special attention will be given to candidates with a record of counter-oppressive education and scholarship and who are able to offer classes that apply theology and ethics to the practices of ministry and community activism.  The successful educator/scholar will be grounded in transformative pedagogies, a strong research agenda, and a desire to be an active member of a multi-religious and anti-oppressive educational community.

Preliminary interviews will occur online in November via Zoom.  Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The term of appointment would begin August 1, 2023 or as soon as practicable thereafter.
