Job Summary

The Network Engineer I installs, maintains, and evaluates network systems and communications equipment. This position is responsible for operational support and maintenance of telecommunications; including installs, and maintenance of telephones and related equipment. Participates in the design, implementation, operation, support, deployment, and distribution of network systems and communications equipment.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Coordinates operational activities for maintaining network systems and communications services including patching, backups, configuration, updates, and documentation.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs telephones and related equipment.
  • Troubleshoots network and data cabling issues within established guidelines.
  • Offers consulting in setting up telephone operations for campus departments. Provides troubleshooting for telephones in the office and in the field. Resolves internal user problems and ensures correct operation of telecom equipment.
  • Assists with network architecture design, feasibility and cost studies.
  • Develops new techniques and procedures to enhance university networking and communications services.
  • Reviews progress, evaluates results, recommends new processes, and promotes best practices.
  • Works with vendors to complete projects such as cable/equipment installations.
  • Changes call trees and updates phone configurations.
  • Serves as an escalation point for Telecommunications Technicians.
  • Reports on network performance.
  • Maintains parts inventory and logs all service/repair activity.
  • Tracks tickets in work order system.
  • Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science or related field.
  • One year of professional full-time experience with wide and local area networks, such as experience with common-carrier data networks.
  • Experience with large to very large enterprise computing environments.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in data center and network design.
  • Current entry level network certification.
  • Experience with Avaya Communication Manager, Avaya VoIP systems, or similar VOIP communications.
  • Experience working in higher education.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn networking concepts such as OSI, TCP/IP, Routing and Switching (OSPF/RIP/BGP) principles, Palo Alto Networks, Juniper Networks, Extreme Networks, and Cisco Networks.
  • Knowledge of QoS in VoIP networking.
  • Knowledge of Avaya Communication Manager, Avaya VoIP systems, or similar VOIP communications.
  • Knowledge of wired and wireless networks, connections, wiring and cabling standards, and network management tools and processes.
  • Knowledge of local and wide area networking, communications, and related hardware and software.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to take the initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and diverse demands are involved.

Salary: $54,300 to negotiable
