The Department of Animal and Food Sciences at the University of Delaware invites applicants for a 9-month, tenure track position of Assistant Professor in sensory science and food product development to begin in Fall 2023. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in food science, flavor chemistry, food fermentations or a related field, and have food industry and/or post-doctoral work experience. The individual should have an interest in and knowledge of the organoleptic and nutritional qualities of foods, regulations that govern food production and the ability to guide students in innovative food and beverage product development projects, especially those involving the UDairy Creamery (e. g. cheese and yogurt). The candidate is expected to network with local food producers and faculty at UD involved in food-related teaching and research projects.

This position is 70% research and 30% teaching. The candidate will teach two courses, one in sensory science and the other, the program's food science capstone. Offering a graduate-level course in the candidate's specific area of expertise is encouraged. The candidate would also participate in advising and mentoring of students. The candidate is expected to actively engage in innovative scholarly activity related to research and education and to seek funding for their research projects involving sensory science, flavor chemistry, value-added functional foods, and/or product and process development through such venues as the USDA-NIFA competitive funding programs (including Food Science and Technology) and the regional food industry.

The candidate will serve as a food innovator, instructing students on how to design and create new, healthful food products for the marketplace. The candidate will serve as an integral part of the University's One Health Initiative and work with the Delmarva food industry in connection with continued growth of College facilities, including the Sensory Science Laboratory and test kitchen associated with the Genuardi Food Innovation Laboratory. The Department of Animal and Food Sciences (http://canr.udel.edu/ANFS/) is one of the four departments in UD's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) located in Newark and Georgetown, DE. The 18 full time faculty members are highly collegial and interact regularly with staff, farm managers, students, administrators, and members of the public. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources includes a 350-acre agricultural experiment station and teaching farm, Allen Laboratory (biosafety level 3), and the Lasher Diagnostic Laboratory. The primary research and teaching laboratory building (Worrilow Hall) completed a $38-million renovation and reopened in late 2020, providing state-of-the-art laboratories and core facilities for use by the successful candidate. Departmental programs cover a wide range of scientific disciplines that support the safe and economical production of domestic livestock and quality foods, as well as the care, health, and use of companion animals. In the field of animal science, disciplines include virology, physiology, nutrition, microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, engineering, biochemistry, genomics, and animal management. In food science, the department covers the disciplines of food safety (microbiology), chemistry and engineering, and culinary aspects of food production. The department is highly collaborative across college, department, and institutional lines and is integrated with Cooperative Extension.
