The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate exceptional promise of achievement as both a scholar and a teacher.

Qualifications

We seek candidates who would complement the existing strengths of the department and the university, especially with regard to the university’s urban Vincentian mission, including those whose work crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries. Possible areas of expertise include indigenous or Afro-Mexican communities, languages, and cultures; border studies, migration, and transnationalism; and gender and sexuality studies.

We seek applicants with a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education, experience teaching students of diverse cultural backgrounds, and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural student population, as well as those with a commitment to experiential, community-based and critically engaged pedagogy. Candidates should be able to teach all levels of Spanish for second-language and heritage-language learners, as well as literature and cultural studies in their specialty and related areas.

We particularly seek candidates who mirror the diversity of the university and its surrounding urban community, and we specifically solicit applications from women, people of color, and individuals from other historically under-represented groups.

Application Instructions

Appointment starts September 2023. A Ph.D. in Spanish or a related field is required by the time of appointment. Native or near-native proficiency in both Spanish and English is also required. Applicants should submit electronically a curriculum vitae, a letter of interest, a statement of teaching philosophy (maximum of one page), one representative publication or writing sample, and three letters of reference (including at least one that addresses teaching) by October 17, 2022. Review of applications will begin at that time, and preliminary interviews will be held on Zoom in mid-November 2022.
