Job Summary

The Masters of the Environment Professional Graduate Program (MENV) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor of Leadership.

The Masters of the Environment (MENV) Graduate Program, within the University of Colorado Boulder’s Department of Environmental Studies, seeks a full-time, 9 month, non-tenure-track Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor. This individual would also be the Faculty Lead for MENV’s core leadership curriculum. The anticipated start date is summer 2023.

We seek a faculty member who will develop, teach and coordinate the integration of environmental and sustainability-related leadership content within the residential MENV program. This will include a focus on environmental justice, corporate social responsibility and environmental and sustainability advocacy. The successful candidate will bring vision, leadership expertise and an entrepreneurial spirit to contribute broadly to the growing MENV program.

The successful candidate will have experience developing leadership curriculum or training for professionals or higher education audiences, and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ). Additionally, the successful candidate will have familiarity and /or interest in topics centered on the environment and sustainability, and a desire to apply leadership curriculum to these fields.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

This is a nine-month, academic-year appointment at the rank of either Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor. It may include additional (compensated) summer responsibilities. The successful candidate will develop and deliver core leadership curriculum in the MENV program, lead and coordinate other faculty in teaching the core leadership curriculum, make substantive contributions in thought leadership, as well as participate in innovative and impactful professional activities. The position includes teaching, advising, administrative duties, and research/professional work. The position includes a mix of the following primary responsibilities:

Faculty Lead

• Serve as faculty lead for MENV’s core leadership curriculum. Oversee and develop the curriculum, engage faculty in curricular development, coordinate faculty instruction, and advise students.

Engage with the University

• Serve as the MENV primary representative for engagement across campus for leadership related events. Actively participate in CU Boulder Center for Leadership activities to ensure MENV students are aware of leader development opportunities.

Engage with External Stakeholders

• Develop and facilitate relationships with external organizations and serve as a resource for relevant stakeholders.

Teaching

• Develop and teach in-person professional graduate courses in leadership.

Capstone Advisor

• Advise MENV students in experiential learning projects.

Support Student Recruitment, Retention, and Reactivation

• Work with the MENV program faculty and staff to support student recruitment, retention, and placement into impactful careers.

Research and Creative Work

• Depending on the candidate background, this position may also include engaging in research or creative work related to professional practice for a small fraction of their time (e.g., 10%). This involves a) demonstrating a deep understanding of professional practices in leadership b) developing, facilitating relationships with, and serving as a resource to external organizations and communities; c) demonstrating impact and innovation within the professional practice; and d) engaging in research and thought leadership relevant to the leadership field.

What We Can Offer

• We can offer a competitive academic year salary, commensurate with experience and qualifications, in the range of $65,000-79,000 for the Teaching Assistant Professor position, or $80,000-90,000 for the Teaching Associate Professor position. This position is a full-time 9-month position (mid-August through early May) an initial three-year contract appointment that can be renewed. It may also include a part-time summer contract with associated compensation at the same rate.

What We Require

For the Teaching Assistant Professor rank:

• Graduate degree (e.g., PhD, MS, MA, MBA, JD) or close equivalent in relevant field.
• Teaching experience at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional level, which may include experience as a graduate teaching assistant or equivalent (e.g., teaching or training as an environmental professional); OR professional experience in a relevant field.
• Demonstrated experience and passion for teaching, shown through course/curriculum development, integration of service learning, teaching innovation, or development of effective pedagogical methods.
• Record of delivering professional development (e.g., delivering workshops, presenting at or organizing conferences).
• Some demonstration of thought leadership (research, publications, presentations) that contributes to a strong professional reputation.
• Some demonstration of outreach, civic engagement, or service in the community or in other areas that utilizes expertise.

For the Teaching Associate Professor rank:

• Graduate degree (e.g., PhD, MS, MA, MBA, JD) or close equivalent in relevant field.
• Minimum 7 years of experience as Teaching Assistant Professor or equivalent; or the equivalent number of years in relevant professional practice.
• Demonstrated experience and passion for teaching, shown through course/curriculum development, integration of service learning, teaching innovation, or development of effective pedagogical methods.
• Strong record of delivering professional development (e.g., delivering workshops, presenting at or organizing conferences).
• Demonstrated thought leadership (research, publications, presentations) that contributes to a strong professional reputation.
• Demonstrated and sustained outreach, community engagement, or service in the community or in other areas that utilizes expertise.

• Professional education, higher education learning, extension school, facilitation, technical assistance, and/or corporate learning.
• Professional leadership experience at the director level or above.
• Strong connections with industry, nonprofits, and/or government to facilitate student opportunities.
• Experience dealing with complex issues, multiple business functions and/or stakeholders with varying interests.
• Experience in student and/or professional mentoring.
• Evidence of engaging diverse communities and creating strong partnerships.
• Experience in creating innovative learning experiences.
