Job Summary

Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for the Behavioral Health Counselor I! The Behavioral Health team at CAPS is comprised of mental health providers embedded in the medical services clinic, the primary health care resource at CU Boulder. This team provides direct mental health services to university students. This role is a collaborative and dynamic position that requires flexibility, multitasking and strong clinical assessment and intervention skills. The CAPS behavioral health (BH) clinicians work in a fast paced, team environment comprised of BH clinicians and medical providers, with the overarching goal of providing mental health services and oversight within the medical clinic. This position provides a wide range of services including crisis intervention, skills training, behavioral medicine, case management, brief therapy as well as mental health consultation and care coordination with other providers in medical services.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

On Call Triage
  • Provide in the moment in person and/or telehealth intervention/assessment to students being seen in medical clinic who have indicated mental health concerns through assessments given prior to appointment or in their appointment. This intervention/assessment includes Safety assessment, brief functional assessment, Behavioral medicine, crisis intervention, and clinical case management.
  • Follow up on previous night’s after hours patient calls.
Follow-Up Care
  • Develop strengths-based crisis and treatment plans that are responsive to client goals, needs, and resources, and promote resiliency and engagement with formal mental health services and other supportive resources within the CU Boulder community.
  • Support student populations who are traditionally underserved by current systems to increase motivation for and reduce barriers to engaging in recommended mental health and other supportive services.
  • Conduct Skills workshops on Behavioral Health related topics.
Crisis Care Coordination
  • Provide crisis consultation to Medical and CAPS clinic staff in emergent situations as well as regarding ongoing care of high acuity clients.
  • Provide consultation and liaison with medical services for CAPS providers needing urgent medical consults and/or support for patients presenting at CAPS.
  • Collaborate with multiple 3rd party/collateral agencies, university departments, and members of student’s community (family, friends, faculty, etc.) to assess crisis reports. Act in a consultative capacity to recommend appropriate crisis responses.
  • Track students who are contacted by first responders and/or transported to hospital/crisis units to provide collateral information for continuity of care and coordinate discharge aftercare.
  • Develop working relationships with police, first responders, and local hospitals/crisis centers. Coordinate welfare checks and psychiatric holds when necessary.
  • Coordinate referrals for resources internal and external to CU Boulder. Engage in collaboration & relationship building with community mental health resources and other CU Boulder departments to ensure exemplary care for CU Boulder students when referred.
Administrative Duties
  • Attend all assigned staff and team meetings and participate in committees as assigned.
  • Provide BH training to new CAPS staff and trainees.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation and maintain Electronic Medical Record according to CAPS standards.
What You Should Know

  • This position's expected hours of operation are 8 am - 5 pm, Monday - Friday, with flexible scheduling options.
  • This is a full-time hybrid position, with at least 3 days expected to be in the office and 2 days can be remote.
What We Can Offer
  • The annual salary range for this position is $55,000 – $70,000.

What We Require
  • Completion of an LCSW, LPC or LMFT from an accredited program.
  • Licensed in the state of Colorado by the date of hire.
  • Experience with a range of clinical issues ranging from developmental issues to more serious psychopathology.
  • Experience providing brief therapy.
  • Experience with electronic medical record-keeping and documentation.
  • Experience and interest in working with university students from multicultural backgrounds and marginalized populations.

What We Would Like You To Have
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience providing psychotherapy and psychological assessment in a mental health setting as a licensed therapist.
  • One year of experience in providing Behavioral Health assessment and treatment services.
  • Experience working in an integrated care model and/or medical setting.
  • Experience with college-aged population.
  • Experience treating substance use disorders and/or eating disorders.
  • Experience in and preference for fast paced and unpredictable working environment.
  • Training in motivational interviewing, solution focused therapy, CBT, ACT, and other models suitable for brief treatment.
