Job Details

Gardner-Webb University seeks an experienced, innovative, and visionary Vice President and University Chaplain for Christian Life and Service to lead the spiritual life of the University. Reporting directly the President, this senior-level administrator will provide leadership for the Office of Christian Life and Service and its accompanying ministries and programs.

We seek candidates who possess a deep sense of God’s calling to the position with an understanding of the current higher education landscape, especially the paths to success for small, private universities. The VP and University Chaplain for Christian Life and Service is responsible for realizing the goals articulated in the University’s Strategic Plan for 2020-2025, with specific responsibilities for the Unit Level – Christian Life and Service 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.

The general duties of the Vice President and University Chaplain for Christian Life and Service include the following:

  • Advance the Christian mission, identity, vision, and short- and long-term goals of the University in coordination with the President; 
  • Serve as a member of President’s leadership cabinet;
  • Communicate effectively with the University community and with members of the Board of Trustees;
  • Provide ministerial vision, strategy, and leadership to the Office of Christian Life and Service;
  • Recruit, hire, train, retain, inspire, and hold accountable a team of ministers, spiritual advisors, and staff;
  • Provide pastoral care to students, faculty and staff and advise student ministry organizations on campus;
  • Coordinate the Dimensions Program and worship services both on and off the Gardner-Webb University campus to continue to elevate and spread the University’s Christian mission and identity;
  • Coordinate the University’s community engagement and service-learning programs that assist community partners, service-learning faculty, and students in developing mutually beneficial service learning and community engagement partnerships;
  • Coordinate local and global mission and ministry opportunities;
  • Coordinate the Honors Experience, an annual one-week immersion for 9th-11th grade students
  • Serve as a liaison to the ministers of Cleveland County and the local region as well as state spiritual leaders, including current denominational partners; Serve as an advocate for the University in the community and with local and state leaders; Lead regular assessment of spiritual life programs and learning outcomes, lead the process for annual reports of programs, and oversee the departmental budget. In collaboration with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, coordinate regular research on the quality of spiritual life at the University; Other duties as assigned by the President.

Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in Bible, theology, ministry, religion, or a related field is preferred; along with at least 3 years of experience at an institution of higher education; Experience in a similar position at a higher education institution preferred;
  • Understanding of Christian commitment and practical experience in Christian spiritual formation; ability to integrate Christian faith with student development theories and practice;
  • Ability to plan and lead thoughtful, biblically-centered worship; skills and the passion to provide pastoral care to members of the community; capacity to teach, preach, and minister effectively to University students and community;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written communication, and presentational skills; outstanding listener with strong relational capacities;
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and uphold confidentiality; ability to manage difficult situations effectively and respond diplomatically to challenging issues;
  • Ability to relate effectively with diverse persons and to work effectively with individuals from a variety of cultures and backgrounds;
