The individual is responsible for the coordination and leadership of student support and programming for cultural affinity groups including, African American, Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American/Indigenous People. Student support and programming is operationalized through education, mentoring, leadership development, retention initiatives, alumni networks, and community engagement. In addition, this position provides support to the multicultural student pre-orientation, RISE (Ready to Inspire Success and Excellence) program and first-generation college student initiatives, and other functions within the Office of Engagement and Inclusion. The individual advises the Multicultural Student Council and is an advisor to the Marquette University Student Government (MUSG) – Diversity Equity and Social Justice (DESJ) Committee and supports other culturally-based student organizations as needed. The Coordinator provides support for students, serves as an advocate for students, and is a key member of the staff working in collaboration with other team members and campus partners to provide excellent service to students.

The Coordinator assists the Director and Assistant Director as a member of the Office of Engagement and Inclusion leadership team with the oversight and management of the Center for Engagement and Inclusion, as well as with supervision of graduate assistant and student staff, and budget management. In addition, this individual assists in the coordination of multicultural and intercultural education, trainings, and programs that promote the richness of diversity and contribute to a culture of inclusion. As a staff member in the Division of Student Affairs, the Coordinator is expected to undertake all responsibilities in a manner that reflects the Catholic, Jesuit mission of the University as well as the principles of student development theory.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Serve as a contributing member of the Office of Engagement and Inclusion team, fulfilling the mission of serving and supporting the intercultural, and cultural competency development of all students, with an emphasis on the development of students of color.
  • Develop, coordinate, and assess programming efforts designed to increase students’ awareness of their own ethnic/cultural heritages, to educate others in the campus community about the richness of diversity on campus, and to encourage student involvement in the Marquette and Milwaukee communities.
  • Design, execute, and assess programs that contribute to the development of cultural identity and to the enrichment of the university community centralized around heritage and cultural appreciation (e.g. MLK Days of Engagement, Asian Pacific Islander History Month, Black History Month, Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, Native American/Indigenous Peoples Heritage, Malkia Circle, Men2Men, Unity Graduation, Commuter Socials, and Black Male Initiatives).
  • Contribute to the Center for Engagement and Inclusion mission of serving and supporting students from historically underrepresented/marginalized backgrounds through service as a resource and mentor for students from historically underrepresented/marginalized backgrounds.
  • Provide support to students from historically underrepresented/marginalized backgrounds through counseling, advocacy, and referrals to resources on and off campus.
  • Design, develop, and implement a high impact programs and opportunities to address the cultural, academic, and social needs of Marquette students from historically underrepresented/marginalized backgrounds.
  • Design and implement programs intended to develop students’ personal leadership and cultural competency skills (e.g., Cross Cultural Leadership Retreat, Cultural Leadership and Vocation Series).
  • Support and advise multicultural student organizations in the development of programs and activities; provide direction, guidance, and support for multicultural organizations and serve as a liaison between the organizations and university offices and community organizations.
  • Assist in the overall and daily management of the Center for Engagement and Inclusion to provide excellent customer service, meaningful diversity and inclusion programming, key student resources, multicultural and intercultural education, and sociocultural and academic student support.
  • Co-manage the daily operations of the Center for Engagement and Inclusion to ensure that the Center is a welcoming and safe environment for all students and to respond to their needs for social, cultural and academic support.
  • Assist in the management of Center for Engagement and Inclusion programming budget, including the disbursement of programming grants for student organizations.
  • Participate in the selection, training and supervision of the Center for Engagement and Inclusion student program assistants and graduate assistant.
  • Work collaboratively with campus partners such as Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, Student Educational Services, Residence Life, Academic Affairs, and Counseling Center to enhance the student experience and assist in the academic success of students from historically underrepresented/marginalized backgrounds.
  • Provide on-site supervision/administrative support for various evening and weekend events.
  • Work with Orientation Programs staff and the Admissions Office in the development and implementation of culturally based orientation and recruitment programs that represent Marquette to students from historically underrepresented/marginalized groups.
  • Serves as a university conduct administrator and advise student conduct hearing boards as needed.
  • Participate in campus-wide committees and professional associations/conferences.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of student assessments and program evaluations.
  • With the other members of the team and student leaders, design and implement peer education, leadership development, intercultural education, and community service programs.
  • Participate in Division of Student Affairs committees, activities and programs.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Master’s degree in Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, or related field.
  • 3-5+ years of full-time experience in the administration of college student programs/services supporting students from historically underrepresented/marginalized backgrounds required.
  • Candidates should possess strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to, knowledge of and experience working with college students from historically underrepresented/marginalized backgrounds.
  • Experience with diversity programming and intercultural education is strongly desired.
  • Candidates are sought who can enrich Marquette University’s cultural, racial, and ethnic communities and can actively support the mission and tradition of Catholic, Jesuit education.
  • Availability to work some nights and weekends when needed in order to ensure a quality student experience is an expectation for the position.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Post-masters experience is preferred, however relevant Graduate Assistant experience will be taken into consideration.
  • Experience with diversity programming and intercultural education is strongly desired.
