The Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department offers degree programs in Early Childhood and Childhood Education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We are committed to providing future educators with unique learning opportunities that merge coursework from our programs and a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion with early practice teaching experiences in our growing Professional Development School ( PDS ) consortium and extensive field placements. Our programs prepare teachers to create child-centered, inquiry-based and developmentally appropriate learning environments and to advocate for children’s equitable educational opportunities from birth through grade six. We are committed to preparing teachers to respond to the needs of all children and families in an increasingly diverse and global society. Early Childhood and Childhood Education faculty represent a rich array of interests with core values including equity and inclusion, effective advocacy, policy formulation, inquiry, eco-justice and collaboration. The position provides an opportunity to join a department with an innovative approach to teacher education and a commitment to inclusion and social justice.
Major Responsibilities
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES : Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, integrate issues of diversity, equity and inclusion into teaching, scholarship and/or service, advise and work with students from a diversity of backgrounds to support their success, observe practicum and student teachers, work in professional development schools and build partnerships with child care centers and schools, maintain a productive research agenda, participate in the affairs of the department, School of Education and College, including but not limited to committee work and curriculum development, and participate in ongoing data collection and analysis to productively participate in program review and accreditation.
JOB REQUIREMENTS :
- Knowledge of emergent, play-based curriculum, assessment and instruction for children with and without special needs ages birth to age 8;
- Skills and experiences in partnering with infant/toddler/preschool and elementary educators;
- Cultural competence and commitment to diversity and Inclusion as part of anticipated career trajectory;
- Demonstrated diversity of thought and experience in both their personal and scholarly pursuits;
- Creativity in course and curricular design;
- Effective interpersonal and organizational skills;
- Support of the SUNY Cortland mission, vision, values and priorities.
- Reports to the academic department chair
- Works closely with department faculty
- Works under the supervision of the dean
- Develops relationships with faculty and staff in other departments and divisions
- An earned doctorate in early childhood education, early childhood special education, or a closely related field, or doctoral candidate, all but dissertation ( ABD ) with designated completion date within one year of appointment
- Knowledge of early childhood curriculum and best practices for infants, toddlers and/or preschool age children
- Evidence of a scholarly agenda including research based presentations and/or publications with excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
- Three or more years’ successful experience teaching in early childhood and/or elementary school settings
- Experience teaching in child care environments and/or schools with culturally diverse populations including English language learners
- Experience teaching children with disabilities and/or knowledge about children with disabilities
- Experience integrating issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching, scholarship and service
- College teaching experience, including teaching fully online
- Demonstrated ability to utilize technology and integrate it into instruction; experience working in professional development schools and/or in partnership with P-6 schools and/or child care environments.
