Research Assistant - School of Computer Science

Job Details

The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities.

Join us as a Research Assistant at Carnegie Mellon's HCI Institute! Assist in research in classroom sensing and learning sciences for the EduSense project.

EduSense is a classroom sensing system deployed in several CMU classrooms that collects multimodal data from instructors and students to help instructors improve their nonverbal teaching practices. It can scale human observation to provide more nuanced and personalized teaching feedback for instructors. This position is focused on conducting user interviews and creating design prototypes to better understand how these data can help instructors reflect on and improve their teaching practices.

All candidates must work individually and as part of multi-site teams, and may also help supervise undergraduate research assistants. Dr. Tricia Ngoon and Dr. Amy Ogan will be your mentors. Candidates will also regularly interact with other project faculty, postdocs and PhDs.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Education, Learning Science, HCI, Game Design, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Expertise and prior experience in human-centered design, conducting user interviews, qualitative data analysis, and excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma.
  • Experience using qualitative and quantitative methods including interviews, surveys, and log data analysis is highly desired.
Requirements
  • Successful background check
Flexibility, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within the HCI Institute. Inclusion, collaboration and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who is able to effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The positions begin immediately upon availability of the candidate and last for one year with possible extension.

Applications should include a resume with details of prior experience and education. Please direct questions and interest in the position to tngoon@andrew.cmu.edu .

Carnegie Mellon Univesity

Carnegie Mellon University challenges the curious and passionate to imagine and deliver work that matters.

A private, global research university, Carnegie Mellon stands among the world's most renowned educational institutions, and sets its own course. Start the journey here.

Over the past 10 years, more than 400 startups linked to CMU have raised more than $7 billion in follow-on funding. Those investment numbers are especially high because of the sheer size of Pittsburgh’s growing autonomous vehicles cluster – including Uber, Aurora, Waymo and Motional – all of which are here because of their strong ties to CMU.

With cutting-edge brain science, path-breaking performances, innovative startups, driverless cars, big data, big ambitions, Nobel and Turing prizes, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn't imagine the future, we create it.

Many seek Pittsburgh for being a hot spot for entrepreneurship and a model for future cities. Others come for the city's burgeoning food scene.
