Assistant Professor specializing in Sport Management



Position Summary:

The University of Dayton Department of Health and Sport Science invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor specializing in Sport Management. The department and UD offer a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary environment, where the incumbent will be valued and supported as part of a dynamic faculty that is committed to the development of competent and skilled future professionals and growing participation of women and under-represented minorities. The sport management program enjoys robust growth on campus and currently enrolls over 130 students. The program offers courses in sport management specialization as well as other academic programs inside and outside the department such as Health & Fitness, Community Health, and Communication.

This is a 9-month, tenure-track position beginning August 16, 2023. Summer teaching opportunities may be available depending on program and department needs. The ideal candidate is expected to teach one or more courses within sport management curriculum such as Introduction to Sport Management, Sport Marketing, Sport Event and Facility Management, Organization Behavior in Sport, Sport and Bodies, Sport Ethics, Research Methods, and Sport Analytics. Additional responsibilities include mentoring and advising undergraduate/graduate students, developing an active agenda of research and scholarship leading to publication, contributing to the growth of interdisciplinary academic programs, and providing service to the program, department, school, university and profession.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • ABD nearing completion in Sport Management or a related field;
  • Promise of excellence in:
    ○ conducting research in the field of sport management;
    ○ teaching and course development in sport management at the college level;
  • Ability to develop a clear research agenda in the area of sport management.
Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
  • Doctoral degree in Sport Management or a related field;
  • Successful experience in one or more of the following:
    ○ developing innovative program growth.
    ○ working in sport, fitness, or health industries.
    ○ academic advising and mentoring of undergraduate and/or graduate students including research projects and career development.
    ○ working in a collaborative and/or interdisciplinary environment.
    ○ teaching in an undergraduate and/or graduate program.
  • Ability, interest, and commitment to one or more of the following:
    ○ work with and/or teach socially and culturally diverse communities.
    ○ student-centered pedagogy (e.g., employ active learning strategies to foster and maintain student engagement).
  • Record of scholarly productivity including peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations;
  • Commitment to breadth of education, including educating the whole person in the Marianist tradition to support the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and a commitment of service to the community, university and profession.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective oral communication skills
  • Effective classroom management skills

Candidates selected for campus interviews will be expected to demonstrate teaching knowledge and skills to university students (teaching demonstration) and present research agenda to the faculty and administration.

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide. With this development, the University will pause any enforcement action against employees who have not complied with the requirement to be fully vaccinated by Dec. 8, 2021 or to have requested an exemption to maintain their employment status.
