Job Summary

Facilities Management at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for a Solid Waste and Recycling CDL Equipment Operator! Commercial Drivers operate heavy-duty trucks with front or rear-end load lift attachment. Drivers are responsible for providing the pick-up service of containers filled with waste, compost or recyclable material. Containers may weigh in excess of 500 pounds and at times require drivers to maneuver wheeled containers to a pick-up stage area. Driver will transport the material to a disposal, transfer or recycle facility when trucks reach legal load capacity. Driver navigates high traffic and congested roadways, driveways, alleyways, and lots. Highly skilled backing maneuvers are important to efficiently perform this job.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Collection Operations
  • Solid waste/recycling collections drivers operate heavy-duty trucks and are responsible for the collection of campus waste or recyclable material. Operate university vehicles to collect waste/recycling material and deliver to transfer station or recycling center.
  • Navigate a variety of routes on a time schedule with safety, road and traffic concerns, and vehicle load operational capacity under consideration.
  • Operate vehicle in accordance with OSHA (Occupational and Safety Health Act) and DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements as well as all local, state and federal laws. Immediately reports all unsafe situations or service related issues to supervisor. Notify supervisor of all incidents, near-misses, accidents, injures, or property damage and/or of service interruptions including closed or impassable streets or alleyways, receptacles too heavy to service or potential safety hazards. Communicate customer requests to supervisor.
  • Follow route assignments as directed and complete end of day documentation and check out process. Perform all duties as and assisting other drivers as directed to meet customer needs. This position covers the entire Boulder Campus and it could be assigned to any campus buildings or campus locations.
Operations Reports
  • Complete pre and post trip inspections results and collections logs on the appropriate forms, ensuring all forms are filled out properly.
    • This includes but is not limited to recording, mileage, fuel, and other fluid usages and completes statistical summary of material by route.
  • Collects weight tickets and forms and submits daily to administrative staff.
Equipment Maintenance
  • Perform routine maintenance on dumpsters, carts and associated equipment.
    • Items can include basic welding, repairing broken items, and disassembly and disposal of items beyond repair.


Vehicle Inspections
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle and documents checks using the standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report). Inspections confirm vehicles suitability for route completion.
  • Incumbent may add fluids, and perform other maintenance tasks if needed. However, should a vehicle fail during a pre-trip inspection or during a route, the driver will evaluate or operate a suitable alternative as well as advise the supervisor.
Other Duties
  • Attend and participate in:
    • All scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required. Complete continuing education to establish or maintain proficiency in vehicle operation capacities.
    • Required safety trainings. Report safety hazards and safety incidents to the supervisor.
  • Provided 15 minutes at the beginning and/or end of each day to complete time cards and other administrative reports. Time cards must be completed daily.
  • This position may be assigned work at the EQ II level up to 20% of the time as a part of the positions on the job training.

  • The work schedule for this position will be four 10 hours shifts rotating every three months.
    • Rotations are Monday-Thursday, Friday-Sunday or Monday-Friday.
    • Monday to Friday rotation works modified hours daily to equal 40 hours for the week period.
    • May be required to work overtime or off hours based on campus needs.
  • This position is designated as Essential Services. A designation of Essential Services means that the employee is required to report to work at times when the campus is closed due to fire, explosion, inclement weather or other emergency situations.

  • The salary range for this position is $42,972 - $45,052 annually.

What We Require
  • Successfully pass a criminal and motor vehicle background check.
  • Must have three years of experience operating equipment appropriate to the work assignment.
  • Must have current:
    • State of Colorado Commercial Driver’s License with Class B endorsement.
    • DOT medical card.
  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.
