Eden Hall Director of Facilities Management

Chatham University is currently recruiting for a demonstrated leader who is responsible for serving students, faculty, staff and campus stakeholders who live and work on the University's groundbreaking and award-winning Eden Hall Campus, built from the ground up to model sustainable living.

The Eden Hall Director of Facilities Management ("Director") is responsible for the day-to-day management of operations of modern and historical buildings, related facilities and systems, and nearly 400 acres of Eden Hall Campus, including student housing and dining, academic and administrative buildings, off-campus rental properties, and non-agricultural landscapes.

The Director manages a facilities team whose responsibilities include:
  • Daily operations of state-of-the-art green buildings, historical buildings, on-site renewable energy systems, and a green wastewater treatment facility.
  • Custodial operations and other housekeeping.
  • Building maintenance and renovation, and other infrastructure development.
  • Landscape maintenance for non-agricultural spaces at Eden Hall, including rain gardens and other sustainable landscape features and practices.
The Director is also responsible for financial planning and budgeting, short- and long-term maintenance planning, and day-to-day scheduling and support of personnel, including managing and participating in the off-hours, on-call rotation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Operations & Maintenance:
  • Organizes and manages engineering, construction and utilities maintenance, buildings and grounds maintenance, mechanical, plumbing, waste management and electrical maintenance and housekeeping services; supervises the use, maintenance and procurement of facilities equipment and supplies.
  • Manages activity related to all heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems and associated control systems to ensure maximum energy savings and compliance with university sustainability goals.
  • Manages campus infrastructure development, including renovation of historical buildings, installation of green energy systems, development of new buildings and systems.
  • Under the guidance of the Director of Green Buildings & Systems, develops long-term plans and annual work plans to guide the operations, maintenance, and future development of Eden Hall Campus in a manner that supports student learning and sustainability targets.
  • Under the guidance of the Director of Green Buildings & Systems, manages building automation and data collection systems to improve building performance and support student learning, university sustainability targets, and faculty research.
Team Administration:
  • Prepares and administers departmental annual budget; manages relationships and contracts with outside vendors contractors who support Eden Hall facilities operations.
  • Optimizes staff scheduling, include off-hours on-call system, to accomplish departmental objectives while ensuring financial and operational effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Responsible for all personnel actions within the department and coordinating personnel actions with HR as appropriate.
Communications, Coordination & Student Experience:
  • Responsible for communication with facilities staff to keep them informed of performance expectations and campus-wide issues.
  • Responsible for facilitating strong communication between campus departments and all facilities staff, including participating in campus shared governance processes.
  • Supports the Director of Sustainable Agriculture in their management of Eden Hall agricultural areas and coordinates with them to promote efficient campus operations.
  • Enthusiastically collaborates with Falk School and University faculty to facilitate the use of Eden Hall buildings and other systems to support student learning and co-curricular experience, including participating in student training and awareness building related to the campus as a living, learning laboratory of sustainable practices.
Qualifications:
  • An undergraduate degree in engineering, facilities management, business, or a related field; or commensurate experience.
  • Experience with and professional certifications related to green buildings, renewable energy systems, sustainable storm- and wastewater systems, and organic-certified landscaping is preferred.
  • Supervisory experience in an active service-oriented environment.
  • Familiarity with advanced building data systems as well as facilities automation tools such as computerized maintenance management system.
  • Knowledge and skills with project management software that includes tracking work orders.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and provide solutions during normal work-hours and off-hours.
  • Emotional intelligence, excellent listening skills, patience for collaborative processes, respect for diversity of background, identity, and perspective, and a positive, solution-oriented attitude.
Physical Requirements:

This position requires a moderate amount of physical labor in assisting with moving equipment, lifting supplies and transporting supplies and equipment.
