Job Title: Director, Laboratory Animal Medicine and University Attending Veterinarian (UAV), Rowan University

Department: Vivarium

Facilities: Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) & Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU)

Reports To: Primary Reporting to SOM Senior Associate Dean for Research with input from Associate Dean for Research CMSRU (for RAFs) and Secondary Reporting to Institutional Official for the Animal Welfare Program (for UAV)

SUMMARY

Primary responsibility is to serve as the Director of Laboratory Animal Medicine for Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) research animal facilities. The responsibilities include oversight of the day-to-day management of operations, fiscal management of facility (SOM), supervision of facility staff, and responsibility for research animal welfare. Time and effort will be divided equally between SOM and CMSRU. The Director will serve as a point of contact for investigators and users of the facility, providing support for research activity and representing the university in activities concerning the use of animals in biomedical research. As part of the time and effort reserved for SOM the Director will also be available for teaching duties within Rowan SOM Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

As the University’s Attending Veterinarian, this position will serve as a member of the Rowan University's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and will report to Rowan’s Institutional Officer (IO) for the Animal Welfare Program. He/she will also advise the Senior Associate Dean for Research at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and the Associate Dean for Research at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University on all issues relating to animal research activities and vivarium operations. The Director will also serve as the Attending Veterinarian for all Rowan University Research Animal Facilities (Stratford and Camden campuses) and, if necessary, any additional facilities that Rowan University may operate. Rowan University has a new School of Veterinary Medicine.

Performs other related work as required.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director will ensure the facilities maintains AAALAC accreditation and are compliant with all applicable regulations for the care and maintenance of research animals, preparing and maintaining all requisite records and regulatory forms. The director will manage and supervise vivarium staff and train personnel in procedures that promote proper animal care and use as required. The director will be responsible for monitoring and maintenance of animal colony integrity, including health status, to ensure compliance and research continuity. Quality control reviews of animal integrity will be made available to investigators, users, and senior administration.

The director will be available to provide ongoing technical expertise and consultation to facility staff and users, as well as IACUC members, and will be thoroughly versed in all practical and administrative aspects of surgical procedures, anesthesia, analgesia, euthanasia, and biosafety as required by research activity. The director must be familiar with institutional and federal guidelines for the care and use of animals and will be the primary formal point of contact for dealing with violations, occupational health and safety issues and facility security. The director will engage users in dialogue on all issues that impact on research compliance and productivity, and will serve as a conduit for dialogue between users and senior administration.

REQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a D.V.M/V.M.D. degree. Candidates must be licensed to practice in the state of NJ or be eligible to obtain licensure in NJ within a reasonable amount of time. ACLAM board certified or eligible for veterinary candidates is desirable. Experience in a research animal facility setting is a must, preferably in a supervisory capacity. Eligibility for a faculty appointment at the rank of Adjunct Assistant Professor is desirable, and college or graduate school teaching experience is considered an asset. Strong organizational skills are required and the candidate must have a good working knowledge of all relevant institutional and federal guidelines and regulations.
