Chief of Student Medicine
Yale University seeks applications and nominations for the position of Chief of Student Medicine within Yale Health, the University's physician-led, comprehensive health maintenance organization. This dynamic and highly influential student health opportunity requires an experienced, forward thinking visionary leader who is committed to the continued enhancement and holistic health and wellbeing of a globally diverse Yale campus community.
The Chief of Student Medicine is part of the primary care leadership team of Yale Health and reports to the Chief Medical Officer. The person in this role will direct all clinical and administrative activities for the Student Medicine department and will partner with the Chief of Mental Health and Counseling and the Chief of Athletic Medicine in addressing the holistic needs of students. Keeping in mind the principles and goals that serve as the underpinning of Yale Health and demonstrating a commitment for patient centered service, the Chief will actively work to integrate health services into the work of university administration, the residential colleges, and deans.
The successful candidate will possess: strong clinical skills; excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey clinical information in accessible terms to a variety of audiences; an understanding of young adult healthcare issues; the skills to work effectively with a college-age population; demonstrated cultural competence; and experience in clinical administration as well as supervision of a multidisciplinary staff.
The Yale Health Student Medicine department provides primary care to Yale University's large and diverse undergraduate and graduate student population, with over 14,000 students. This physician leader will be responsible for developing and implementing efforts to enhance the health and wellbeing of a globally diverse student community and ensure the effective provision of high quality, multidisciplinary health-related services that reduce barriers to learning and create opportunities for greater academic achievement and student success.

Position Responsibilities
- Directs and ensures that clinical excellence of
patient-centered outstanding care is delivered to Yale students
under the care of Yale Health.
- Develops and implements a holistic approach to wellness through
the integration of student medical care with behavioral health. For
instance, successfully transitioning an individual from acute to
non-acute settings.
- Work in concert with key department personnel to re-envision
the Student Medicine department to ensure that students' needs are
being met whilst simultaneously looking to foster collaborative
relations with other Yale Health departments.
- Ensures immediate and prompt delivery of after-hours coverage
for urgent student matters that must be escalated by on site
clinical teams. Arranges clinical coverage for the department
during vacations and CME.
- Provide leadership of the Student Medicine department and
actively assess and determine staffing needs, develop departmental
operating systems, and consistently assess and evaluate
departmental operations in preparation of Yale Health's annual
departmental budget review.
- Actively collaborate with Chiefs of other primary care
departments and the Chief of Mental Health & Counseling to
provide optimal healthcare delivery to Yale Students.
- Engage in active recruitment, selection and appointment of
skilled clinicians in conjunction with the Chief Medical
Officer.
- Supervise and maintain oversight of the Student Medicine
department ensuring an adherence to standard of excellence as
dictated by the Yale health and University personnel policies and
procedures. Specifically, this includes consistent evaluation and
counsel of department personnel, recommend promotions, manage
terminations and make decisions regarding annual merit increases
for eligible personnel.
- Ensure compliance with all clinically relevant regulatory and
accrediting requirements while also continually participating in
service improvement and service recovery initiatives relating to
the operations of the department.
- Responsible for the review of referrals to secondary providers
outside Yale Health. Serves as liaison to Yale University School of
Medicine department of specialty.
- Participates as a member of Chiefs and Primary Care Chiefs
leadership groups and other selected organizational committees.
Assists the Chief Medical Officer in special projects and
represents his or her department in communications with other
organizations. Relatedly, is expected to manage certain
organizational initiatives where quality of care, safety and/or
other institutional priorities require clinical
leadership.
- Maintains Population Medicine programs for high-risk patients
as delineated in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer and
Chief Quality Officer.
- Demonstrates interest and leadership in teaching and research
activities within their department. Reviews and comments on any
proposals for teaching or research projects within feasibility,
timing and involvement of staff, and forwards approved proposals to
the appropriate review committees or senior managers.
- Informs staff of institutional policies and plans and
interprets existing policy as needed. The Chief also informs senior
management and peers of policy and operational issues. In carrying
out these responsibilities, the Chief meets regularly with the
Chief Medical Officer, and conducts regular meetings with
staff.
Education and Experience - Graduation from an accredited medical school
- Currently licensed to practice; if not licensed in Connecticut,
eligible to obtain a State of Connecticut physician license without
delay
- Qualifies for hospital and faculty appointments
- Current State of Connecticut Narcotics Registration or eligible
to obtain a license without delay
- Current Federal DEA Registration
- Evidence of an ability to build and manage a diverse team of
providers
- Demonstrated clinical skills as attested by colleagues and
supervisors
- Demonstrated ability to implement developed standards of
quality medical care and the monitoring and utilization of health
services
- Preferred: previous management experience, preferably in a
university or college student health center or in a health care
system such as an HMO or IPA

non-clinical stakeholders
- Possesses a full complement of management attributes, including
the ability to hold difficult conversations, if
necessary
