Job Description

The Secondary Education Program at Providence College invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor in secondary education, beginning August 1, 2023. We seek applicants whose teaching and research agenda focus on effective teaching practices that honor the learning strengths of the diversity of students found in today’s secondary education contexts. We have a strong preference for candidates who demonstrate a commitment to publicly engaged scholarship, student-centered pedagogical and mentoring practices, and supporting the success of students from historically marginalized economic, social and cultural groups.

The Secondary Education Program at Providence College prepares students with a passion for teaching to lead science, foreign languages, language arts, history, and math classrooms in middle and high schools throughout the country. Our students major in these subject areas while simultaneously completing the secondary education program. They participate in structured field experiences that provide opportunities to interact with local middle and high school students in a variety of schools and classrooms.

Essential Duties

Candidates for this position will provide clinical supervision and instruction to students aspiring to be future secondary school teachers. We would invite applicants whose areas of specialization include, but are not limited to, secondary-level teaching methods, inclusive systems and practices, urban education, the sociopolitical context of education, and student teaching supervision. The teaching load is nine credits per semester with potential for a one-semester pre-tenure research leave available. The successful candidate will also have established a scholarly research program and possess a willingness to be active in professional service to the college’s expectations of tenure/pre-tenured faculty.

Education and Experience Required

• Earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education or closely related area
• Relevant experience in secondary-level education
• Successful record of teaching and supervising undergraduate secondary education majors
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
• Demonstrate ability to establish a research agenda in their area of specialization
