Position Summary: 

Assistant Professor of Political Science with a primary subfield of American Politics, with a secondary field in public policy or public administration preferred. This is a full-time, tenure-track position in the Department of History and Political Science within the College of Arts and Humanities. Arkansas Tech is a mid-sized liberal arts university emphasizing teaching (4/4 load) and undergraduate education. Successful candidates must be able to teach online, as well as face-to-face courses. Departmental undergraduate programs include B.A. in Political Science, International Studies, History, Public History, Social Studies Education, and a combined Anthropology/Geography degree. The department also offers a M.A. in History and supports the Master of Liberal Arts program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop, teach and assess undergraduate Political Science courses in-class, online, and mixed modality.

Effectively advise and mentor students at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Engage students in high impact learning practices.

Develop and maintain a significant and sustainable scholarship agenda.

Contribute departmental, college, university, and professional service to the university, community and state.

Engage in assessment and continuous improvement of courses.

Perform other duties assigned by the Department Head.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and a history of working effectively with colleagues

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Political science (or ABD with expected completion date by August 31, 2023) with a specialization in a non-Western field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates specializing in political behavior, mass media (particularly social media), and/or campaigns and elections.

Preference may be given to candidates who have taught political science research design and methods.

Preference may be given to those who have taught classes in women and politics, Latino politics, African-American Politics

Preference may be given to those who have taught classes dealing with Southern Politics

Preference will be given to those who would be comfortable teaching multiple classes online in a semester

Candidates should provide evidence of or potential for fostering an inclusive environment for diverse populations.

Candidates should provide evidence of or potential for working with a large population of first-generation students.

Work Location, Environment, and Physical Demands:

This position is located in offices and classrooms at ATU. The position is assigned a desk and computer in location that may be in a different building than classroom locations, so the position requires the ability to change locations and/or walk moderate distances during the day. Required activities include: teaching and lecturing, sitting for extended periods, use of a keyboard and mouse, use of standard office equipment.
