Research Professor & Roux Institute Member, Human- Computer Interactions in Medicine

About the Opportunity

Northeastern University's The Roux Institute, located in Portland, ME, invites applications for multiple Research Professor and Institute Member positions in Human-Computer Interaction for Medical Application. The faculty title is open rank. Expected start date is flexible but should not be before July 1, 2022.

We seek applicants with a background in Human-Computer Interaction, Data Visualization, Ubiquitous Computing, Mobile Computing, and/or Human-AI Interaction. Experience working in medical applications is desirable and interest in this area is a must. Specific topics may include predictive analytics for diagnostics and treatment, home care, personal health informatics, and sensing and monitoring applications, among others.

The Research Professor (open rank) will be responsible for overseeing the growth of an independent research program, coordinated under the umbrella of the Data Visualization Research vertical and with applications in the Life Sciences and Medicine research vertical. Besides the faculty title of “Research Professor (open rank)”, the successful candidate will be named as an “Institute Member” at the Roux Institute.

Besides driving their own research program as a Northeastern University faculty member, the Research Professor will contribute to a portfolio of highly matrixed collaborations with contributors on the Institute campus in Portland ME and beyond. Collaborators will include faculty and professional research staff at The Roux Institute, faculty across the Northeastern network, and researchers at our partner organizations. The Northeastern University research network includes a collection of highly innovative university institutes, including the Institute for Experiential Artificial Intelligence, the Institute for Experiential Robotics, the Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things, and the Network Science Institute (www.northeastern.edu/institutes).

Key responsibilities include:
  • Developing an independent research program centered around some aspect of HCI or data visualization relevant to Roux Institute partners.
  • Building strong ties with interdisciplinary collaborators and industry, nonprofit, or government partners and actively engaging these individuals in the research program.
  • Obtaining research funding.
  • Supervising research staff, post-docs, and graduate students.


The successful candidate will be appointed as a faculty member in one or more of

Northeastern's Colleges and Departments, with their primary locus at the Roux Institute as part of the Data Visualization Research vertical. They will report to their disciplinary department chair in their role as a faculty member, but they will also have a matrixed relationship to the Director of Data Visualization Research in Portland, who is responsible for the construction and execution of the relevant overarching research theme in Portland.

Qualifications
  • PhD or other terminal degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Design, Health Science, or a related field, with experience level appropriate for appointment at the rank of Research Assistant Professor, Research Associate Professor, or Research Professor.
  • Demonstrated track record of scholarly achievement in relevant areas of HCI or visualization, with a commensurate publication and research funding history.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary research teams and build long-term relationships with external partners.
  • Excellent communication skills across diverse audiences and settings.

  • Entrepreneurial, energetic, and collaborative leadership skills.
  • A strategic mindset. Ability to work in a fast-paced and innovative setting.
  • Experience working in an industry research setting is desirable.
