Texas Lutheran University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position for the Director of Bands in the School of Music to begin fall 2023.  Anticipated rank is Assistant or Associate Professor. 

Position requirements include:

  • Earned doctorate.  (ABD with completion by August 2023 or a master’s degree with extensive professional experience may be considered.)
  • Ability to teach introductory courses, music education courses and conducting
  • Evidence of excellence as a wind ensemble/concert band conductor, preferably at the collegiate level
  • An interest and ability to recruit students to the program, both majors and non-majors
  • An understanding of the public music education system and a willingness to establish and maintain rapport with secondary school teachers in the region
  • Willingness to nurture a positive relationship with the Mid-Texas Symphony, a regional orchestra located in our community
  • Strong commitment to excellence in the teaching and advising of undergraduate students
  • Ability and desire to affirm the mission of Texas Lutheran University and work collegially with fellow faculty members

The successful candidate will:  conduct the university wind ensemble and concert band, with responsibility for assisting in recruiting and auditioning for those ensembles; provide leadership and direction for the jazz band and pep band; actively recruit music majors and non-majors in cooperation with the other members of the School of Music; engage in scholarly and/or creative research activities; work collegially with representatives of other disciplines, programs, and offices on campus.  Additional teaching assignments based on a candidate’s strengths and qualifications.  Preference will be given to candidates who meet the above qualifications and who also offer one or more of the following:

  • Experience in the Texas public school music system
  • Willingness to plan and execute summer band camp and band festival
