An AMSTI site director is a 12-month employee of the IHE, with compensation defined by the **Salary Matrix for AMSTI Directors. Directors who are National Board Certified will be entitled to the additional amount paid by the state for such certification, as long as the certification remains in effect. Future employment is contingent upon AMSTI funding
AMSTI site director responsibilities include the following:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Communicate and collaborate with AMSTI-ALSDE to implement all AMSTI projects, recognizing that the ALSDE is the final authority regarding policies and operations of AMSTI sites
  • Oversee and coordinate the effective operation of the AMSTI site, which includes supervising staff and the materials/refurbishment center, budgeting for site activities, and monitoring the AMSTI Inventory Management System (AIMS). This includes the supervision of AMSTI-ASIM staff in coordination with the AMSTI-ASIM PI.
  • Plan, set up, and supervise (and coordinate with AMSTI-ASIM) training according to instructional and resource components identified by AMSTI-ALSDE. Prior approval to miss the setup of and execution of Foundational Training must be granted by AMSTI-ALSDE. AMSTI-ALSDE must approve absence from set-up and training prior to the event.
  • Oversee and/or coordinate with AMSTI-ASIM, Regional Inservice Centers, IHEs, science centers/museums, AMSTI Affiliates, and other related entities in implementing AMSTI
  • Oversee the recruitment and selection of schools and teachers that are recommended to receive AMSTI PLOs
  • Lead site efforts to expand and retain AMSTI status for schools and teachers
  • Coordinate ongoing mentoring and content-deepening opportunities for current and potential specialists and facilitators/trainers
  • Arrange and supervise publicity and media releases showcasing regional AMSTI and AMSTI-ASIM events, to include social media according to PR requirements
  • Coordinate PLUs and other professional learning in AMSTI and AMSTI-ASIM schools, to include planning, facilitating, conducting, and/or overseeing
  • Maintain records of the following:
  • Schools, administrators, and teachers participating in various project components (Foundational Training, OGAP, in-service training, new hire training, etc.)
  • Daily itineraries of staff, including AMSTI-ASIM
  • Evaluations of specialists with the purpose of fostering professional growth, including AMSTI-ASIM (at those sites where the AMSTI-ASIM PI or their designee directly supervises the AMSTI-ASIM program, this must occur in collaboration with the AMSTI-ASIM PI)
  • Evaluations of Foundational Training and other staff development activities to assess the effectiveness of the Initiative, including AMSTI-ASIM
  • Activities with businesses and higher education
  • Financial operations and documentation as required by the ALSDE and the institution associated with the site
  • Other documentation required by the ALSDE, local institution, and/or the funding source (e.g., SharePoint and site reports), including AMSTI-ASIM


  • Provide data-driven guidance and support to LEAs and schools, including AMSTI-ASIM
  • Complete and submit the required paperwork in a timely manner
  • Coordinate with other AMSTI sites and provide assistance, as needed
  • Pursue grants and other forms of funding to support the mission of AMSTI (must be approved in advance by the ALSDE)
  • Participate in professional learning activities and staff meetings as required by the ALSDE. Prior approval for absence is required
  • Foster positive public relations with local school systems, businesses, communities, and higher education
  • Participate in AMSTI and/or AMSTI-ASIM workgroups
  • Perform other duties assigned by AMSTI-ALSDE

    Required Qualifications:
    QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
    • Master’s Degree or equivalent in Elementary Education and/or Secondary Education required from an accredited institution of higher education
    • At least three years training and experience with AMSTI
    • Broad and extensive educational work experience to include a minimum of five to ten years teaching in Alabama Public Schools
    • Knowledge of PC systems and a variety of software
    • Skill to effectively write and deliver oral presentations and respond to questions from a wide variety of on and off campus groups and individuals
    • Ability to bring creative and innovative solutions to problems and demonstrate a commitment to teamwork and service
    • Valid Alabama Teachers Certification required
    • Valid and current driver’s license required
    • FBI/ABI fingerprinting background clear status required

    QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:
    • Leadership experience and significant experience in teaching and those who show evidence of professional involvement and scholarship, especially in the areas of Science and Mathematics, preferred

    Salary Schedule:
    Salary will be based on education and teaching experience according to the Athens State University-AMSTI salary schedule for Directors. **Salary Matrix for AMSTI Directors.
