Assistant Director

About the Opportunity

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director will provide individualized and holistic advising to undeclared students in the Explore Program to support their academic exploration and experiential engagement. The Assistant Director will manage the hiring and training of the various Explore Program student leadership positions to ensure that student leaders are well-prepared to support Explore Program students as they discover their academic interests and plan strategically for life-long learning. The Assistant Director will also take a lead role in developing and implementing a plan for persistence advising, ensuring Explore advisors provide consistent and supportive guidance to at-risk and struggling students.

Qualifications:

Five years' experience in developmental learning and intensive professional advising in college. Proven ability to plan and implement new administrative or academic programs in college. Master's degree in college student development or related field. Superior knowledge of NU administration, programs, fields of study, and policies. Detailed knowledge of undergraduate admissions, college placements, and transitional programs. Excellent ability to work independently as well as in groups. Superior communication and organizational skills. Advising background preferred.

Responsibilities:

Academic Advising and Advising-Related Activities
Provide holistic advising to students as they explore their academic interests, encouraging them to connect with appropriate campus resources needed to clarify academic and career goals. Guide students towards academic and experiential engagement while fostering the understanding that learning happens everywhere in Northeastern's ecosystem. Interpret and explain academic policies and procedures to students; advise on curricular matters, NUPath, major requirements and other academic and personal issues as they arise. The Assistant Director will teach one section of FSEM1000, Connections and Decisions in the fall and spring semesters. (60%)

Peer Programs

Develop and manage student leadership programs, including hiring and training of Coordinators, TAs, NUin Mentors, NU Bound Mentors, Summer Ambassadors and Admissions Ambassadors. (30%)

Persistence Advising

Develop and implement on-going persistence advising plan for at-risk and struggling students. This will include a system for tracking and advising students until goals are met (return to good academic standing, declaration of major, etc), as well as providing guidance to Explore advising team as they implement the persistence plan. (10%)
