The department of Communication and Theatre is seeking a tenure track, assistant professor, technical director beginning August 2023. By nurturing the art of live theatre, the mission of Theatre at AUM is to provide access for comprehensive training in all areas of theatre artistry and to develop a well-rounded, engaged, inclusive ensemble of emerging artists by developing skills in the classroom and offering an annual season of diverse classical and contemporary productions in the laboratory theatre. Montgomery offers diverse cultural and recreational opportunities including the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, multiple nationally acclaimed Civil Rights Memorials, a natural habitat zoo, an independent film theater, and the Montgomery Biscuits baseball team.

Our ideal candidate will be a collaborative, self-motivated, organized individual with solid leadership and communication skills who has the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, create work and production schedules in a student prioritized environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach courses in Stagecraft, Lighting, Scene Design, Scene Painting, Theatre Appreciation and related special topics which may include: properties, sound, technical direction, or other courses to be determined
  • Accomplish external creative research activities and service to the profession at the regional, national, and/or international level.
  • Participate in recruitment, department and college meetings, campus committee work, training sessions, and collaborate on program assessments and planning
  • Serve as faculty mentor to support and encourage students through their design and technical production process.
  • Facilitate safety measures and is responsible for overall supervision of work in technical and design disciplines (carpentry, scenic art, rigging, electrics hang and focus) with undergraduate student crews for associated Scenery and Lighting elements on four annual productions, and auxiliary events as needed.
  • Provide appropriate production paperwork
  • Attend production meetings, rehearsals as appropriate, technical rehearsals, and facilitate strike (includes select nights and weekends). Help coordinate auxiliary shows, events, and our touring productions as needed
  • Work within allotted budget and reconcile receipts, makes purchases in consultation with the Theatre Coordinator and Department Chair, estimates, budgets, tracks expenditures
  • Maintain and track inventory of technical theatre areas: electrics, sound, scenic and property spaces, equipment, materials, and area specific supplies and tools
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and work from ladders and/or other heightened levels
