Function:
The Associate Director supports the overarching mission of the Department by fulfilling the following duties and responsibilities.
Duties & Responsibilities: General
- In collaboration with the Director and campus partners,
plan, implement, and assess large-scale leadership,events,
workshops, retreats that currently exist at Barnard or develop new
initiatives to address emerging issues, needs, or student
concerns.
- Advise the Governing Board of Barnard (GBB), a student
organization designed to support GBB recognized clubs and
organizations, including but not limited to supporting groups
financially, developmentally and GBB serves as an advocacy group
for recognized student groups
- In collaboration with the Director, advise two of the four
SGA Class Councils, Sophomore and Junior Class
Councils.
- In collaboration with the Director, assist in the
development of policies, procedures, protocols, and learning
outcomes tied to all aspects of the Department.
- Advise clubs, organizations, and student groups recognized
by the Department labeled classified as academic or
pre-professional groups or with a mission that aligns with the
scope and purpose of the role.
- Supervise four professional staff members, all of whom play
a significant role in advising student clubs and organizations
supported by the Department.
- Develop, plan, implement, and assess Barnard Leadership
Training, a robust student leadership training for positional
leaders in student groups recognized by the Department and/or
college.
- Oversee and assist in the development of all student leader
training programs coordinated by the Department including training
for NSOP student staff, office assistants, peer educators,
etc.
- In collaboration with campus partners both at Barnard and
Columbia, manage all aspects of an Alternative Spring Break program
exclusively for Barnard students.
- Coordinate leadership and community engagement initiatives
with Program Coordinators focusing on social justice education,
service learning, volunteering, arts education, and identity and
inclusion.
- In collaboration with the Director, coordinate all aspects
of the SGA Leadership Awards and Recognition
Ceremony.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for the Department on
all aspects of a robust Gallup Strengths program, serving as a
Strengths Coach, and assist the Department and Barnard College with
facilitating coaching sessions for student leaders, students, and
other members of the Barnard community.
- In collaboration with the Director, oversee budgeting and
financial responsibilities for areas supervised by the Associate
Director.
- Contribute to the Department's marketing and communication
efforts via content management platforms and other means to ensure
the campus community is informed and aware of Experiential Learning
Experiences initiatives.
- Contribute to or in some cases chair Department committees
in the context of identity and Leadership and Community Engagement
as needed including but not limited to NSOP, Student Recognition,
Commencement, etc.
- Assist in staffing campus-wide programs and initiatives both
via the Department and the College; may include some evening and
weekend responsibilities.
- Serve on campus-wide committees representing the Department,
specifically if there is a need or request for representation of
Leadership and Engagement initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:
Qualifications:
- Masters Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student
Development or a related field
- 6-8 years of experience working in an higher education
setting, ideally working with leadership development, civic
engagement, social justice, service-learning or
volunteering
- Experience supervising professional staff in a higher
education setting
- Experience both advising and supervising undergraduate &
graduate students
- Experience facilitating large group discussions, training
sessions, retreats, etc.
- Experience with traditional Alternative Spring Break
initiatives, specifically working abroad
- Strong communication, time management, and organizational
skills.
- Familiarity with Clifton Strengths Finder and Strengths
coaching
- Experience working with the following software programs;
Engage or other Anthology programs for organization management,
Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe
platforms,
- Positive approach to professionalism
- Ability to work in a high volume, high traffic, and high
energy environment
- Comfortability working as a member of a team and willingness
to be a member of the Barnard Community.
