Position Description

Performs executive, administrative duties concerning various aspects of operational management in support of the Service Plus philosophy and mission of Texas Tech.

Reporting to the Vice President of External Relations, the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Communications and Marketing (C&M) leads efforts to elevate the University's profile and steward its reputation with global, national, and regional news media; prospective students and their families; donors; and other influencers and stakeholders. In collaboration with the University President, Vice President for External Relations, and other TTUHSC leadership, the AVP guides the development and implementation of strategies and activities that enhance the University's visibility, promote and protect its brand and reputation among external and internal constituents, and ensure strategic alignment among all external and internal communications deployed across multiple platforms and channels.

Major/Essential Functions

Communications and Marketing
  • Developing and executing a comprehensive, long-term and proactive university-wide communications, marketing and brand strategy consistent with the strategic goals and vision of the University
  • Developing solutions, strategies and partnerships to support the clinical practice, philanthropy, alumni and constituent engagement; community and government relations; major university events; and internal communications
  • Leading and supporting a campus-wide communications and marketing framework for student recruitment and retention that support the University's enrollment goals, in close collaboration with the Office of the Provost and school deans
  • Leading proactive media relations programs and ongoing interaction with regional, statewide, national, and global media
  • Promoting the University's mission and vision to multiple constituencies while ensuring consistent adherence to University brand guidelines and identity standards
  • Understanding, identifying and developing an appropriate mix of communication platforms including digital platforms
  • Managing major communications assets and reports including, websites and social platforms, brand center and annual performance reports
  • Maintaining strong communication channels with department, campus and university leadership in order to support in order to support the university’s vision
  • Managing crisis communication strategies for the university
Leadership
  • Guiding the efforts of a team of integrated communications and marketing professionals
  • Providing leadership and vision in developing and implementing a strategic and integrated communications program that reflects the insights, needs and input of a highly diverse university and clinical practice
  • Offering strategic reputation counsel to university leaders, and helping address crises and/or reputational challenges
  • Serving as the back up to the Vice President of External Relations for strategic communications with the Office of the President and Office of the Chancellor as needed
  • Leading the Communications and Marketing team in developing operational efficiencies to enhance and deliver consistent service and communication
  • Collaborating with External Relations Regional Campus AVPs to ensure consistent strategy, execution and messaging
  • Serving as a member of the External Relations leadership team working to develop synergies and effective strategies to advance the mission of the university
  • Cultivating appreciation for strategic communications across a large, complex, decentralized multi-campus community and collaboratively and intentionally engaging stakeholders in communications and marketing strategy
  • Maintaining a strong awareness of industry trends, remaining current through continual learning and professional development and sharing learned information with the team
  • Serving as a role model for teamwork and focus on innovative, communication and marketing solutions
Developing Teams
  • Leading, managing and supporting a team of four direct reports including brand marketing/digital strategy director, creative director, earned media director and communications director ensuring operational efficiencies, the developing project scope and timelines and successful execution of projects
  • Developing performance goals and metrics for each function C&M team
  • Creating a team environment, motivating team members and cultivating productive, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Administrative Responsibility
  • Contributing to the overall success of the University by performing other duties as assigned
  • Developing and administering policies and procedures focused on ensuring brand integrity
  • Overseeing financial and budget operations of the department
