Position Description:

The Dean's Office of the College of Engineering seeks culturally and professionally diverse candidates to apply for the Enrollment Counselor/Senior Enrollment Counselor. Since its inception in 1996, the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering has brought innovative, real-world engineering education to Central Virginia. Comprised of five different departments plus the Dean’s office, the College of Engineering enrolls more than 1,700 undergraduate and 250 graduate students in several degree programs supported by approximately 550 full-time, part-time, and student employees. Establish relationships with students, parents, and counselors who have shown an interest in learning more about the
undergraduate programs in the College of Engineering. Coordinate the development of new recruitment techniques to build new markets to identify and attract potential students. Establishes relationships with schools in and around Virginia where VCU is currently underrepresented. Represents the College at events such as receptions, conferences, and open houses. Coordinates and conducts open houses, information sessions, interviews, and counseling sessions with prospective students and their parents to provide information about the College, admissions processes, and university policies and procedures. Routinely interfaces with University officials on admissions/recruitment issues. Evaluates data and applicant credentials for admission and counsels prospective students on their admissibility. Handles assignments timely and makes decisions independently with minimal guidance from supervisor.

This position is one of two Enrollment Counselor/Senior Enrollment Counselor roles at the College. These roles each work on a selection of the following responsibilities. The distribution of responsibilities may change over time to better match the strengths and interests of the incumbents, frequently with one position taking leadership and the other provides assistance.
  • Undergraduate Student Recruitment
  • Meet visitors, respond to prospect communications via email, phone, and CoEgr CRM system
  • First Year Applicant Review – Evaluate and review First Year applications
  • On Campus Event Coordination OR Assistance
    • Open house, admitted student events, and other recruitment related activities
    • Planning and coordination with external vendors in event preparation
  • Maintain Tallo platform and conduct searches
  • Develop and implement plans for new search platforms and methods

    • Inventory Management – Maintain inventory of publications and promotional materials.
    • Regularly Scheduled Info Sessions – Primary presenter for regularly scheduled info sessions
    • Student Employee supervision
  • Travel for Recruiting events
    • Attend college fairs including, but not limited to:
    • Participate in Campus-Wide admissions events
    • Conduct school visits in targeted schools while traveling out of state
    • Virginia ISEF Affiliated Events
    • FIRST Robotics Liaison – Chesapeake Region and national
  • CRM and Social Media
    • Process regular CRM data uploads
    • Subscriber management
    • Record consolidation and deduplication
    • Work with students to produce social media
    • Continuous contact with Marketing and Communications to ensure social media relevance
  • Student Ambassador
    • Advisor for Student Ambassadors
    • Manage Unibuddy student to student chat Platform
    • Coordinate with other student organizations
  • Other Duties – The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Experience working with high school and/or college aged students (teaching, counseling, advising, or other
    administrative roles may qualify)
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in public speaking and interaction skills
  • Strong comfort level with making presentations to small and large groups
  • Experience in event and project planning
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Responsible, mature, self-starter with good judgment and the ability to handle sensitive/confidential matters are essential qualities
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and ability to work with a diverse population
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Tech savvy with the ability to use common office software applications (MS Office, Google Suite, virtual conference applications, database skills, etc)
  • Availability to work off normal hours, including weekends, and significant travel
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and years of experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Considerable experience in college admissions, recruitment, or marketing
  • Knowledge of admissions/recruitment procedures
  • Experience with admissions/recruitment CRM, Slate preferred
  • Experience with graphic design and related software packages (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Experience with HTML for email or website development
  • Experience using social media as a marketing tool
