Position Summary
The Carl Vinson Institute of Government at The University of Georgia invites applications and nominations for a public service faculty position within the Planning and Environmental Services Unit of the Strategic Operations and Planning Assistance Division. The Carl Vinson Institute of Government is a Public Service Unit under the leadership of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach. The position will be available December 1, 2022 and carries rank in the public service faculty career ladder of The University of Georgia.
The Planning and Environmental Services Unit assists cities, counties, and government authorities by supplying them with information, presentations and written reports that serve as management tools to aid in decision making. Projects include compatible land use studies, land conservation proposals, resilience plans, and coordination among federal, state, and local stakeholders. This position will report to the Planning and Environmental Services Assistant Director. This position requires travel. The position will spend considerable time working directly with military personnel and the Army Corps of Engineers as well as state agencies, local governments, and other partners to build a program that conducts community planning resilience research, technical assistance, and education and outreach that has demonstrable impacts to reducing community vulnerability to natural hazards and other disruptions. Thus, it is critical that the candidate possess the desire, ability, and background to interact in a very objective, positive, and supportive manner with these important clients of the Institute of Government.
Responsibilities
- Identify, write proposals, lead/participate in, and facilitate local, state, and federal engagement and community-engaged technical assistance, applied research, and other engagement efforts to support inclusive resilience and adaptation planning, economic and community development, and other topics that serve community-driven needs with a focus on communities adjacent to military installations.
- Secure funding to support outreach activities through contracts, grants, and other appropriate mechanisms.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with personnel in county governments, state government agencies, local government authorities, and municipal governments as well as community partners in surrounding areas.
- Meet with potential clients to assess and determine technical assistance needs.
- Develop project proposals and budgets.
- Provide management support and oversight as part of a multi-disciplinary team of faculty and staff at both the Institute of Government and the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems, focusing, in large part, on military-community engagement.
- Provide assistance and consultation and perform applied research as needed.
- Participate in professional associations and organizations.
- Serve on Carl Vinson Institute of Government and University committees.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Candidates will be considered for the position until it is filled but are assured of being considered if materials are received by October 15, 2022 . Application materials should include a cover letter, a resume or curriculum vita, and three signed letters of recommendation.
