Director of Disability Support Services

Responsibilities:  Under the supervision of the assigned Associate Vice President, the Director of Disability Support Services (DSS) has responsibility for compliance with a broad range of state and federal disability laws and regulations, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADAAA) and the Fair Housing Act.

Provide leadership to Bowie State University in maintaining compliance with these federal and state disability laws and regulations by coordinating and providing access for students with disabilities to all programs and services of the university. Provide administrative oversight for all disability accommodations and services for students. Hire, train and supervise DSS employees. Educate, assist, and provide guidance to the campus community on disability accessibility.

 

Qualifications:   A Master's Degree or higher in Social Work, Special Education, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or closely related field required. A minimum of five (5) years of prior related experience required. Three (3) years of experience supervising professional employees. Experience with coordinating services to students with disabilities in a post-secondary setting. Experience with interpreting Americans with Disabilities ACT, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act for accommodation determination in the post-secondary environment. Experience with Collaborating with university faculty members to ensure students are afforded approved accommodations.   

 

Skills:  Planning and developing program goals and objectives. Applying budgetary and fiscal planning techniques within financial constraints. Delivering effective presentations to large and small audiences. Working with individuals of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Creating, composing, and editing written and electronic material with attention to detail. Multi-tasking and efficiently managing multiple communications via phone, email, online chat, and in-person. Task management. Conflict resolution and mediation.

 

Ability to:  Analyze problems, identify solutions, and take appropriate action to resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes. Maintain and enforce strict confidentiality related to sensitive information. Communicate effectively in a variety of scenarios including oral presentations, face to face consultation, group meetings, tabling events, phone calls, print and electronic communications.

 

Knowledge of:  Legal and ethical considerations for disability accommodations processes in higher education settings. Assistive technologies and accommodations utilized by students in higher education. Disability service organizations in Maryland and national associations for disability professions.

 

 

Conditions of Employment:  This is a Non-Union Position.  Please be advised, COVID-19 vaccinations are encouraged but not required for faculty and staff to be employed at Bowie State University.  This protocol is subject to change.

 

 

SALARY:  $90,000 - $95,000
