This opportunity is a SMART Reader who shows up to weekly sessions with a student or classroom. Books shared during a reading session are chosen by the SMART Reading students and/or teacher. Students will choose books from the curated book collection, if reading to a classroom then books will be from our virtual library. Required Qualifications:
This is a work study position, your work study eligibility will be verified upon receipt of application.

Education and Experience:
Must be a current Linn Benton Community College student in good standing and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Program Emphasis/Purpose: Linn-Benton Students will be assigned to read in our Virtual or In-Person SMART Reading programs with students in Pre K through the third grade. Children read with their assigned Reader(s) weekly on the same day and time from mid-October through May. SMART pairs work study students with students who have been identified by their teachers as benefiting from additional reading support. SMART helps provide students with the early literacy foundation they need to succeed in school and eventually in life. The program sessions, virtual and/or in-person, along with the times and days will vary according to elementary school schedules and we will work with Linn-Benton students to find times that do not conflict with their school/work schedules. Linn-Benton students will focus on encouraging reading motivation and a love of books and reading in elementary students.

Abilities: Work-study students must be able to read and relate to children. SMART work-study students are advocates for children and believe that all children can learn to read. Ability to interact sensitively and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications: Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Can make a commitment to show up for each scheduled reading session during the school year, with only occasional exceptions.

Work is performed indoors with no exposure to safety and health hazards.

Essential Duties:
Work-study students must be able to read and relate to children and they must be able to pass a criminal history check. Also, SMART work-study students are advocates for children and believe that all children can learn to read. Students can make a commitment to show up for each scheduled reading session during the school year, with only occasional exceptions. Once again the scheduled hours will vary with the school’s needs.
