Virginia Military Institute (VMI) invites applications and nominations for the position of Institute Physician. VMI seeks an accomplished, team oriented physician who will proactively lead and oversee the Post Infirmary. This position reports to the Deputy Superintendent for Finance, Administration and Support and is responsible for providing leadership to a staff of 12 full-time employees including a doctor of nursing practice, nurse administrator, licensed practical nurse, registered nurses, insurance coordinator, office manager, and receptionist.  The current team enjoys a high sense of teamwork and cohesiveness.  Additionally, the Infirmary has a licensed pharmacy that allows dispensing the most commonly prescribed medications to Cadets.
 

This is an exciting opportunity to provide health care services to a very active and vibrant population of 1,750 members of the Corps of Cadets.  The VMI Infirmary is housed in a modernized medical facility which includes three exam rooms, an orthopedic recovery ward, administrative and support spaces.  The VMI Infirmary maintains medical records through Medicat HER. The Infirmary is open 24/7 during the fall and spring semesters, and from 7am to 3pm during summer sessions.  It is closed during established furlough/holiday breaks for the Corps of Cadets.  
 

 Position Summary: 
 

The Institute Physician is responsible for the medical care of the Corps of Cadets and the administration of the VMI Infirmary.  The Institute Physician will spend a majority of time providing medical care to Cadets and the balance attending to management and professional duties.

Essential Functions:

  • Holds daily sick call for the Corps of Cadets including, but not limited to, by appointment.
  • Utilize mature discernment and judgement in proscribing duty status and associated specific limitations to duty while supporting protocols that return Cadets to duty in an appropriate and timely manner.  
  • Determine and make necessary medical referrals.
  • Share on-call coverage with NP while cadets are in residence.
  • Complete medical review of all accepted applicants to VMI and make recommendations to the medical appeals committee.
  • Develop medical and health education and disease-prevention programs.
  • Serve as a member of the Violence Prevention Committee and Threat Assessment Team
  • Advise the Cadet Emergency Medical Technical organization on Post
  • Collaborate with NCAA trainers.
  • Provide leadership for mission, strategic planning and services provided by the Infirmary. 
  • Provide visionary leadership and ensure a workplace focused on culture of civility.
  • Meets and maintains professional requirements for medical licensure by the Virginia Board of Medicine, including continuing medical education requirements, DEA licensure for prescribing, Virginia Board of Pharmacy licensure for dispensing controlled substances, and appropriate professional liability insurance. 
  • Must be Board certified (or Board eligible) in a Primary Care specialty, with at least three years of pertinent clinical and management experience. Family or Internal Medicine specialties are preferred. 
  • Knowledge and experience in the medical, psychological, and developmental needs of the college population, including alcohol and other substance abuse problems, diversity and multicultural issues, sexual assault, and mental health issues. 
  • Professional demeanor, common sense, excellent clinical and interpersonal skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, the personal maturity to deal effectively with ill and/or troubled students, the ability to maintain confidentiality of personal health information and work effectively as a professional staff member leading a multidisciplinary health care team. 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the health care team in providing patient-centered, culturally sensitive care using evidence-based medicine, which requires the ability to easily communicate with, and teach, student patients from all walks of life.
