Open Rank: Assistant/Associate Research Professor

About the Opportunity

Northeastern University invites applications for a non-tenure track Research Professor (open rank) in the field of infectious disease drug discovery, affiliated with the Laboratory for Neglected Tropical Disease Drug Discovery (LNTD3), located at the Boston campus.

The research professor will be responsible for (1) building an independent and externally-funded research program; (2) providing leadership for overseeing the growth of the existing funded research program in the LNTD3; (3) performing as an individual contributor on funded medicinal chemistry optimization projects of small molecules that target infectious diseases such as human African trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, leishmaniases, malaria, fungal diseases, and others.

This position will be supported entirely by external funding and is an annually renewable position. Present funding levels will support this role for one year, with funding annually renewable for up to three years, allowing the successful candidate to develop their own funding portfolio, and to support that of the LNTD3.

The successful candidate will interact with laboratories across the world, both industrial, non-profit, and academic, who collaborate with the LNTD3 in rounding out the required multidisciplinary research capabilities that are essential for successful drug discovery programs.

The College is strongly committed to fostering excellence through diversity and enthusiastically welcomes nominations and applications from members of groups that have been, and continue to be, underrepresented in academia.

Qualifications:
  • PhD or other terminal degree in organic or medicinal chemistry, or a related field, with experience level appropriate for appointment at the rank of Research Assistant Professor, Research Associate Professor, or Research Professor, by the appointment start date.
  • If coming from an academic research laboratory environment: a publication record that reflects experience in relevant areas of chemistry, with a commensurate research funding history
  • If coming from an industrial research laboratory environment: proven ability to drive successful medicinal chemistry programs, either in early discovery, hit-to-lead optimization, or lead-to-candidate optimization.
  • Candidates must show excellence in, or a demonstrated commitment to, working with diverse student populations in a culturally diverse work and educational environment. Where appropriate, candidates should highlight prior experience working with members of underrepresented groups.

Documents to Submit:

Candidates must provide (1) an updated curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and external funding;

(2) a research summary (2-3 pages) outlining an ambitious drug discovery program in infectious diseases and/or neglected tropical diseases;

(3) a statement about the candidate's perspective on creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive environment. Please provide an example of a time when you altered or changed your approach to research, teaching, or service because of the diversity of the group you were working with or your awareness of marginalized populations. What changes did you make? Did they have the effects you hoped for at the time? What did you learn from this situation? How would you expect to apply what you learned from this situation as a faculty member in the College of Science? We are interested in how you handled and learned from a past situation, not the identities of the people involved, so please only disclose what you are comfortable with.

In the Northeastern University College of Science, we embrace a culture of respect, where each person is valued for their contribution and is treated fairly. We oppose all forms of racism. We support a culture that does not tolerate any form of discrimination and where each person may belong. As a College, we strive to have a diverse membership, one where each person is trained and mentored to promote their success.
