Technical Shop Assistant

Position Summary:
The Technical Shop Assistant monitors and assists student shop users using the College of Art and Architecture Technical Design Studio during evening and weekend hours. The Shop Assistant position supervises student employees and shop users, maintains a safe workshop environment, and provides technical instruction to shop users of varying skills and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Specific and demonstrable competence with hand and power shop tools and the ability to train others to use them safely;
  • Specific and demonstrable experience in conveying technical information, particularly to non-technical audiences;
  • Specific and demonstrable ability to supervise skilled and unskilled persons within a studio/shop environment;
  • Effective problem-solving abilities;
  • Good oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to exercise patience when dealing with students of varying ages and abilities. Some Knowledge of behavioral management related to an educational environment;
  • Willingness and ability to obtain or renew First Aid and CPR training;


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a university or other educational setting.
  • Experience presenting educational materials to students and working in a group education setting;
  • Specific and demonstrable experience in mechanical and electrical system diagnostics and repair;
  • Specific and demonstrable experience in physical and digital fabrication pertaining to woodworking, textiles, CNC, 3D Printing, laser cutters;
  • Familiarity with, or a willingness to learn, the diverse wood, metal, and plastic applications used in an academic design setting, including but not limited to shaping, laminating, carving, bending, fastening, and finishing;
  • Experience working with Computer-Aided Design/Manufacturing design software or 2D and 3D design software.
  • Experience in or appreciation for the design disciplines.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • The Technical Shop Assistant is a part-time position that requires the employee to be available for 4 to 5-hour shifts during the operating hours of 4 pm until 10 pm, Monday through Friday, and 9 am and 1 pm on Saturdays throughout each semester. The maximum number of hours available is 20 hours per week. The employee should anticipate opportunities to work outside of these times and reduced/revised hours during academic breaks.
  • The employee must possess strength and mobility to lift/move equipment or materials weighing 50 lbs.
  • The employee must be able to stand and walk continuously throughout their shifts.
