Department Summary

The InfoGraphics Lab is a mapping and geospatial technology facility housed in the Department of Geography. The Lab is renowned for its award-winning work in cartographic production and design and has long been a leader in atlas production and web mapping. Projects include collaborations with partners throughout the state of Oregon and beyond on projects using innovative geospatial technologies, cartographic design, and Geographic Information Science.

The Lab serves the Department and the University community of faculty, staff, and students through research support, instruction, and service. Currently, the staff consists of 8-10 employees including faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students. The Lab prides itself on providing experiential learning opportunities to students who contribute to real-world cartographic projects.

The Geography Department is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in various types of geographic study. The Department of Geography has 24 Faculty, 125+ undergraduate majors, and 35+ graduate students. Research and graduate education in the Department of Geography focuses on the following subfields: (a) Geographic information science: cartography, GIS, data analysis and visualization, spatial analysis, and modeling; (b) Human geography: political-ethnic, cultural, human-environment relations, and behavioral geography; (c) Physical geography: Quaternary studies, biogeography, climatology and climate change, hydrology, and geomorphology; and (d) Environmental studies: forest and ecosystem issues, river and watershed issues, biodiversity and global environmental change, policy and law, cryosphere studies, and environmental applications of GIS.
Position Summary

The University of Oregon College of Arts and Sciences is searching for a new InfoGraphics Lab director to lead one of the top university cartography labs in the country. The successful candidate will be responsible for the vision, direction, administration, and growth of the InfoGraphics Lab, housed in the Department of Geography. The new director is charged with sustaining the Lab's position as a national leader in the implementation of innovative cartographic design, methods, and products. The successful candidate will seek out and develop projects and relationships within the university, the state of Oregon, and beyond that contribute intellectually and financially to the Lab's direction and growth. The successful candidate will be responsible for administrative management of multiple projects; writing grant proposals as a Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI; and will manage 8-10 employees that include staff and students. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach one course per year. This position reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree or higher in Geography, Cartography, or related field.
  • Two years of experience in the administration of a Cartographic and GIS research program or cartographic production organization.
  • Experience supervising personnel and budgeting.
    Professional Competencies

  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of print and web mapping concepts.
    Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience serving as a PI or lead on GIS- or cartographic-related projects.
  • Publication record or portfolio (professional and/or academic) in GIS or cartographic design.
  • Demonstrated experience and entrepreneurial spirit working with a variety of project partners, researchers, and clients such as university departments, government agencies, NGOs, nonprofits, or the private sector.
  • Knowledge of current and trending cartographic techniques, such as demonstrated experience with ESRI ArcGIS and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Demonstrated record of identifying and developing funded cartographic projects.
  • Experience working with development officers or potential donors.
  • Experience teaching GIS/cartography.
