The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChemBE) at Johns Hopkins University seeks applicants for a full-time teaching position. This is a career-oriented, renewable appointment. The title of Lecturer is the entry-level position for a well-defined professional career path for full-time teaching faculty, culminating in the rank of Teaching Professor.

The focus of the position involves the development and delivery of undergraduate (especially) and graduate courses related to the candidate's background. These positions typically carry a load of two courses per semester, with an additional one or two course-equivalents in departmental and/or university service-related responsibilities. In total, this leads to a load of six course-equivalents of responsibility. Teaching faculty typically also have advising responsibilities for undergraduate students. Extensive grading support as well as professional mentoring is provided to all instructors. Guidance in teaching and course design is also available through our Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation. Opportunities exist for the successful candidate to conduct either independent scientific research or pedagogical research.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in chemical engineering or closely related field, and some teaching experience. The candidate will aspire to push for innovations in engineering education; help develop curriculum and other programmatic initiatives; be comfortable teaching larger groups of students (up to 100 students); and have a strong technical background in a chemical or biological engineering or related field. Industry experience, while not required, is also an asset.

The faculty member will join an existing and dynamic group of Teaching-track Junior and Senior Lecturers in the department. This position will be filled at either the Junior or Senior Lecturer level with a multi-year renewable contract, commensurate with the candidate's experience and current rank. A Senior Lecturer appointment requires teaching with distinction for no fewer than four years at a similar university. Criteria for promotion include excellence in teaching, educational publications, curriculum development, and pedagogical innovation. The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary and benefits options including health and retirement plan participation. The start date for this position will preferably be no later than December 30, 2022, with a phase-in of teaching duties.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
