Job Description

A full-time Research Associate is sought for the lab of Dr. Zhen Yan at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion. The Yan lab is an interdisciplinary research group of molecular biologists and exercise physiologies that studies the impacts of regular exercise on health and various pathologic conditions, including diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart failure and Alzheimer’s Disease. We use a range of tools and techniques, including CRISPR-Cas9-mediated gene editing and tissue-specific inducible transgenic mice in different exercise models. We work with collaborators all over the world to translate the findings to have direct impact on general population and patients. We seek a qualified individual to work across multiple projects in the lab to implement and develop methods to study the impacts of exercise on health and disease prevention. This individual will also be expected to work closely with collaborators at FBRI and other institutions and maintain a high level of research progress and presentation in all interactions. The work of this scientist will bridge multiple grants and projects which require in vivo imaging and analysis, cellular assays, and animal physical and behavioral work. This position will require in-person laboratory time at the Roanoke campus.

Required Qualifications

• M.S. (or equivalent) in Biology, or related field. A focus on exercise physiology with molecular interventions in whole animal models is required.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills to work with colleagues in a diverse and engaging environment and across disciplines.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on both small details and big ideas.
• Demonstrated animal work skills, including design of experiments, implementation of techniques, and development of new techniques.
• Track record in Molecular Biology with expertise in exercise intervention, metabolic assessments, and muscle functional measurements in mice.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in training of lab techniques to others.
• Strong technical writing skills demonstrated by track record of publications.
• Strong interest in independent development of research trajectories and ideas.
• Effective project and time management.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
