The Executive Director of Instructional Technology will lead the school’s technology and TV engineering strategies and services. Reporting to the Dean, the executive director will collaborate closely with school leadership, faculty and staff to design and implement technology plans that serve the school community; and champion standards of excellence befitting the nation’s premier public communications school. The ideal candidate is a mission-driven leader, passionately advances both the IT and TV engineering disciplines, and meets the following qualifications listed below.

The Newhouse School’s three-building, five-studio complex is a cutting-edge learning environment where students harness the tools and technologies used by professionals in the field. Beyond the 21 traditional classrooms, Newhouse students also access a range of professional environments including broadcasting live ACC sporting events from Dick Clark Studios, monitoring social media in the Real Chemistry Emerging Insights Lab and experimenting with 360° cameras inside the Alan Gerry Center for Media Innovation. Syracuse University’s NPR affiliate, WAER, includes an on-air master control booth, a main production studio, a talk studio and a newsroom with editing suites and field kits. A dozen computer labs equipped with the Adobe Creative Suite and other software allow students to create media to industry standards, and students make more than 10,000 reservations a year from the Newhouse CAGE, which houses 10,000-plus pieces of equipment including cameras, light kits and other gear. Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment and at least 10 years of related experience which includes three years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience with learning management systems, such as Blackboard; building cloud environments and infrastructure with broadcast and production related services and systems, both standalone and hybrid with on-premises infrastructure; evaluating and recommending technology solutions to assist with making strategic decisions to use of IP and cloud initiatives; IP and IT systems, including design, installation, repair, documentation operation and security of individual components and networked systems
  • Experience with non-linear editing technologies, digital asset management and newsroom systems
  • Expertise in current and emerging technology and engineering practices, and follows new technology trends with high curiosity
  • Demonstrated leadership of staff in a technology- or engineering-related environment
  • Experience creating and managing a technology or engineering budget and communicating technical and budgetary matters to both technical and non-technical staff
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals at all levels of an organization
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, and proven experience in executing innovative concepts
  • Highly motivated with the ability to take initiative, set priorities and perform tasks with minimal guidance
  • Strong command of video conferencing equipment and producing video-conference events; familiarity with Zoom, Vimeo and other platforms
Responsibilities
Executive Director of Instructional Technology
  • Reporting directly to the Dean, the Executive Director of Instructional Technology is responsible for enhancing the instructional environment for faculty and students through integration of technology in the curriculum; enabling productive faculty research and creative activity by leveraging technological applications; supporting effective administrative operations through the deployment of innovative solutions; and advancing the mission and goals of the school by gathering broad input, planning effectively, and allocating resources appropriately.
  • Oversee and manage a robust portfolio of technology- and engineering-related projects, and participate in and/or lead project teams to develop and execute new initiatives
  • Manage all operational activities associated with content delivery across broadcast and digital platforms, including broadcast technologies, A/V technologies and digital multicast broadcasting
Strategic Leadership
  • Provides strategic leadership in determining and developing a comprehensive, reliable and adaptive technology environment for the school.
  • Work closely with Newhouse leadership team and faculty to align operations with strategic planning
  • Advance and deploy technological advancements and strategies for the students, faculty, staff and professional guests
  • Highly collaborative position with a focus on both IT and TV engineering; passionately advances both the IT and TV engineering disciplines
IT Department Leadership
  • Senior Administrator of the School’s IT department, who supervises, evaluates, and develops a professional development plan for the IT staff (which currently includes 14 members and includes computer consultants, training managers, technology technicians, equipment distribution and inventory support staff, and all the studio management, engineering and support staff)
  • Establish and continuously nurturing a culture of customer service, innovation, excellence and professional advancement among the department’s staff
  • Manage budgeting, purchasing and account management for an annual technology budget of over $1 million
  • Direct procurement, inventory, maintenance and distribution of all engineering, A/V, IT and multimedia production software, hardware and equipment
  • Responsive in emergency situations, and available to work on some predetermined evenings and weekends
Faculty & Staff Collaboration
  • Collaborate with the School’s faculty by identifying the right technology to meet their curricular objectives and support their research and creative activities. This includes proactively engaging with faculty and their departments to understand their teaching and scholarly/creative initiatives, and then providing advice, guidance and leadership in developing technological solutions that will enable them to achieve their goals.
  • Likewise, the position works closely with staff to understand their needs, and to identify technology that enhances their efficiency and productivity
  • Collaborate closely with school leadership, faculty and staff leadership to design and implement technology plans that serve the school community from students to faculty, and staff to other stakeholders and will champion standards of excellence befitting the nation’s premier public communications school.
University & Industry Engagement
  • Develop and nurture relationships with technology companies on behalf of the school.
  • Serve as the school’s technology ambassador, developing relationships with direct and extended team members to advance their work while championing high quality and best practices.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to ensure IT systems meet operational objectives and are appropriately integrated into the university’s technology environment
  • Represent the Newhouse School in relevant university forums, lending expertise to diverse Syracuse audiences
