The Senior Director of Student Academic Support and Achievement will work primarily in the Medical Student Education unit to develop and oversee a comprehensive academic success program. They will provide leadership in the design, implementation, and assessment of programs and services that support academic success for IUSM students at all 9 campuses. The Senior Director will deliver key initiatives to increase retention and graduation rates through enhanced academic tutoring and success services. The Senior Director will report to, and meet regularly with, the Assistant Dean for Academic Advising and work closely with the Assistant Dean for Holistic Student Success and Advocacy. Ten percent of their time will be devoted to educational research within the Department of Surgery.

  • Create, oversee, and monitor a comprehensive academic support program for students.
  • Utilize quantitative and qualitative data and research literature as a foundation for academic success practices, recommendations, and pedagogies.
  • Implement and evaluate new initiatives and educational techniques and strategies, based on continuous research of evidence-based practices.
  • Develop and disseminate materials, resources, and curricular content, including online offerings, to enhance academic enrichment access and support for learners at key points including entry into medical school, transition between phases of the curriculum, and protected time to prepare for high-stakes examinations.
  • Partner across all academic and administrative units, leading new innovative efforts to support student success.
  • Provide 1:1 consulting services for students with specific emphasis on learning, studying, and test-taking strategies.
  • Actively manage the peer tutor program, including enhancing the training of peer tutors and assessing outcomes of the program.
  • Collaborate and contribute to all aspects of the Prematriculation program and the Year 1 to Year 2 summer success program.
  • Engage and support the academic advising community through professional development and advocacy.
  • Provide workshops, presentations and orientations for students, colleagues, professional organizations, etc.
  • Create, update, and review critical communications to students and faculty to ensure a clear and consistent message.
  • Review student promotion and retention data among other learning outcomes, to revise academic support programs and implement strategies to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness using key performance metrics related to student academic support including student feedback, student evaluation data, evidence of student service, and value-add metrics.
  • Conduct and participate in collaborative, innovative research that advances the medical education field.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate or Terminal degree is required. PhD, EdD, MD/DO, or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD or EdD degree in educational psychology, instructional design, adult learning, higher education administration, counseling, or related field – with knowledge of student development and learning theory.
  • Medical education work experience, including previous work as a learning specialist
  • Skills in building content in learning management systems, such as Canvas, and with online survey generation tools, such as Qualtrics.
  • Experience developing educational materials and/or teaching that connects basic science, clinical reasoning, and educational pedagogy and theory.
  • Leadership skills with previous experience supporting, managing, strengthening, and growing a team
  • Strong collaboration and innovation skills.
  • Experience managing and supporting grant-based initiatives.

Additional Qualifications              

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to set priorities, manage multiple tasks, and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Research, teaching, or service that contribute to our commitment to diversity, equity, justice, anti-racism, and inclusion in higher education, medical education, and the workplace.
