The University of Virginia's College at Wise invites applications for a Director of Academic Success. This position will report directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs.  The Director will manage the creation of a new Academic Success Center as a major expansion of Student Support Services on campus.  The Director will be a student-facing member of the Academic Success Center and will coordinate the efforts of a diverse team of academic intervention specialists.    

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Academic Support

 

  • Review student academic needs and develop comprehensive action plans on a case-by-case basis Develop and implement novel academic success programming to meet the needs of a diverse learning community Work with Admissions to identify students for early academic intervention Coordinate activities with other student support services offices, including but not limited to, TRIO, Disability Services, and the Writing Center Meet with the Academic Departments to develop interventions at key bottlenecks in curriculum Assist in development and dissemination of academic success best practices through the First Year Experience Program (New Student Advising Corps, First Year Success Seminar, etc.) Work in collaboration with Admissions to identify students for early academic intervention Liaise with Academic Affairs in development and management of intervention programs for students in the Academic Warning, Probation, and Suspension Program

Administrative Actions

 

  • Work collaboratively with the Provost to identify key new academic support roles and to recruit new personnel Recruitment and training of peer educational leaders, such as peer tutors and peer accountability mentors Manage budget expenditures related to the Academic Support Center, including student and staff payroll Delegate staff priorities, and manage and report progress on projects central to the mission of the Center and College Identify and secure, when possible, extramural funding for novel initiatives in Student Success

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent is required, along with 3+ years of experience in higher education academic support and/or student development.  Experience in pedagogy or STEM education is preferred.  Candidates must demonstrate clear experience as a team leader

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

 

  • Knowledge of current principles, practices, and trends in higher education relating to academic success programming Knowledge of applicable, federal, and state laws and regulations Ability to apply legal and policy standards Excellent oral, and written communication skills Excellent ability to clearly communicate ideas and recommendations Strong organizational skills in handling, directing, and prioritizing multiple and complex assignments/projects Effective supervisory, counseling, interpersonal and leadership skills Ability to teach learning skills and present training programs to a wide variety of groups Computer literacy Ability to maintain confidentiality and act with professionalism, sensitivity, and neutrality Ability to use appropriate judgment when making decisions and recommendations Must be able to competently interact with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff
