Job Summary

The Benefits Specialist is responsible to educate University staff and faculty on health & welfare benefit programs and retirement programs, sponsored by the Division or State Group Insurance, the Division or Retirement and the University. This position will assist with the management of the University leaves of absence program and University Wellness Program. Serves as a liaison to employees, colleges/departments and HR colleagues regarding absence management, health and welfare benefits, retirement and wellness.

Job Description

Typical duties include but not limited to:
  • Assists in the administration of Health and Welfare plans. Counsels staff and faculty on health and welfare benefits.
  • Coordinates payroll inputs for State Group Insurance and University benefit enrollment.
  • Enters time off benefits for employees on leave, maintains time off accruals in Workday.
  • Runs reports to audit plan enrollment and underpayments.
  • Escalates complex health and welfare issues to the Benefits Manager.
  • Administers leaves of absences documentation, including accurate application of state and federal leave laws including FMLA, USERRA and FGCU policies.
  • Collaborates with the Benefits Manager to develop employee and retiree communication materials to enhance understanding of the state and University sponsored benefit plans.
  • Hosts benefits and retirement education sessions for new hires.
  • Processes enrollment and changes for FRS, ORP, 403(b) and FICA Alternative Plan.
  • Partner with campus staff and local community to build and enhance the wellness campaign.
  • Coordinates Workers Compensation claims.
Other duties:
  • Supports Benefit Fair activities.
  • Participates in special projects.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma.
  • Four years of full-time experience in Benefits or closely related area.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in a closely related field.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to benefits administration: Worker’s Compensation, COBRA, FMLA, etc.
  • Knowledge of human resources and/or benefits administration concepts and best practices.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply and convey University regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to think critically and make clear, well-reasoned and timely decisions.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply complex plan documents and laws.

  • Ability to manage and coordinate assignments in order to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision. Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
