Summary

The Biology Laboratory Coordinator primarily supports the Foundations courses in Cell & Molecular Biology and Organismal Biology through planning, organizing, and preparing materials and exercises; recruiting, training, and supervising student lab assistants; and teaching sections of these lab courses. The Coordinator also supports the faculty through inventorying and maintaining equipment and supplies in all labs. This is a ten-month position.

Responsibilities to the Foundations courses in Cell & Molecular Biology and Organismal Biology:

  1. Teaches three lab sections each semester.
  2. Prepares handouts and/or lab manuals for course laboratories.
  3. Assists faculty in evaluating student learning and subsequent modifying of laboratory exercises.
  4. In consultation with faculty course coordinators, develops, maintains, and monitors the performance of student tutors involved in the College's peer-assisted learning PAL programs.
  5. In consultation with faculty course coordinators, determines the equipment and supplies needed for each laboratory exercise as well as coordinating the preparation of materials and the tear-down of each laboratory exercise by student workers and others.
  6. Orders all laboratory equipment and supplies, processes the ordering paperwork, and maintains appropriate records.


Responsibilities to the Biology Department:

  1. Maintains, monitors, and ensures proper security of laboratory equipment, including supervising regular equipment inventories conducted by faculty and student workers. Also responsible for contacting vendors and arranging scheduled maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  2. Coordinates lab safety and chemical hygiene for the department, including recruiting, training, and supervising student workers and others who conduct annual chemical inventories in the department.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. M.Sc. in biology or related field.
  2. Prior experience teaching undergraduate laboratories.
  3. Prior research and/or laboratory prep experience in cell/molecular biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, physiology, and/or related fields.
  4. Ability to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students and to supervise student workers.
  5. Ability to work efficiently and simultaneously on multiple projects.
