Job Summary

The Center for International Development (CID) at Harvard University is hiring for an Assistant Director, Communications and Events. With CID undertaking an ambitious growth strategy as it expands its presence and impact within the university and globally, this role will be critical to CID's overall success. Reporting to the Senior Director of Administration and Finance, the successful candidate will oversee and manage strategic communications and events that maximize the Center's reach, brand, and impact and support new revenue generation efforts. The successful candidate wouldbe creative, entrepreneurial, self-driven, have excellent communication, design, and organizational skills, and a passion for being part of a team that endeavors to make a positive impact by helping build a thriving world for all.

The position entails communicating CID's work to a variety of audiences including donors, policymakers, the development community, researchers, students, and the general public, overseeing website, social media, and media development and management, and hosting frequent CID events. Primary responsibilities include developing and implementing a strategic communications plan; cultivating key media relationships; developing communication and promotional materials; managing planning and ensuring successful execution of CID events; positioning CID faculty, fellows, staff and students as thought leaders in relevant markets; managing CID's portfolio of online content; managing and implementing editorial calendar; and building CID's visual and multimedia brand.

Position Description

Communication Management
  • Work with the CID leadership team to help design, develop, and implement the overall communication, brand, and public relations strategy in line with CID's new strategic plan.
  • Work in collaboration with Harvard Kennedy School's (HKS) Office of Communications and Public Affairs (OCPA) to amplify research of CID faculty affiliates and core program; manage and cultivate CID media relationships in relevant media markets
  • Design and develop a range of communication materials, including the development of CID's Annual Report series
  • Redevelop and maintain CID's websites; create and manage CID's digital strategy for social media and email marketing (including Salesforce mailing list)
  • Coordinate with CID programs to help promote their content and ensure communications and CID brand consistency.

Events Management
  • Plan, manage, and execute internally and externally facing CID events with the support of CID staff including high-profile marquee events, annual GEMS conference, and weekly/monthly CID events.
  • Develop and manage events and outreach budget.
  • Explore opportunities and coordinate with other centers at Harvard and external institutes and organizations to co-host events of mutual interest.

This position is a fully benefits-eligble term appointment ending one year from date of hire with the strong possibility of renewal.

This is a hyrbid position based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. The position is required to work in-person and on-campus a minimum of three (3) days a week during the academic year. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years (3 years with a Master's degree) of progressive experience including design, communications, professional website and social media management, events management, and/or outreach
  • Experience using MS Office (particularly MS Excel) as well as presentation and design platforms (e.g. PowerPoint, Adobe Suite, etc.), and creative production workflows

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Excellent visual, graphic and multimedia design sense
  • Demonstrated designing, writing, proofreading, and social media skills
  • Experience in visual, graphic and multimedia content design, development, and delivery
  • Keen attention to detail; ability to work independently and in collaboration with internal stakeholders
  • Experience with Adobe Suite and related design software
  • Experience in university, fundraising, and/or social science communications
  • Proficiency in Drupal and HTML/CSS
  • Experience with fundraising communications and database management, particularly in Salesforce and MarketingCloud
  • Experience with Cision, Google Alerts, and/or other media monitoring software
