The College is comprised of faculty across four departments with active research agendas. Altogether, the College of Education has $53 million in active grant funding from federal funding agencies (e.g., NIH, OSEP, IES). The College of Education offers: a history of collaboration with schools to conduct research; technology support and infrastructure; and doctoral programs wherein students assist with research.

Position: The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is seeking a faculty member at open rank (assistant, associate or full professor) in secondary English. This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-line or tenured appointment depending on rank at the time of hire.

Position Description: The Department of Curriculum and Instruction possesses an outstanding reputation in the areas of curriculum, literacy and teacher education. We seek candidates who will join the College of Education to engage in scholarship, discovery and innovation to provide transformative learning experiences to have an impact on society. 

We seek candidates with expertise in secondary English education (grades 6-12). Candidates will undertake a program of research that will lead to an outstanding and sustained record of scholarship and external funding. Teaching assignments will include secondary English methods courses in the middle grades and high school licensure programs; a course in disciplinary literacy; and graduate courses in literacy, multiliteracies, and writing across the curriculum.  Candidates will participate in graduate program development in on campus and online environments and in the recruitment, advising, and training of graduate students.

Qualifications: Earned doctorate in English education or a related field is required. Evidence of scholarly activity/potential is required. Candidates at the associate or full professor level must have an established record of research, teaching, and service to meet the University’s requirements for tenure at the appropriate rank. Candidates at the assistant professor level must have an earned doctorate at the time of proposed start date. Minimum of three years K-12 teaching or equivalent experience with adolescents.

Preferred Experience: English teaching experience in middle school or high school. Significant professional and/or academic experience in multicultural and diverse educational settings. Research and publications reflective of critical and sociopolitical perspectives in the field of literacy/ELA education. Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teacher preparation and working with diverse populations, prior university teaching experience, and familiarity with Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards. Experience with National Writing Project or other professional development in writing.

Responsibilities: Carry out an active program of research and actively pursue external funding. Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate-level course work related to English education and disciplinary literacy. Advise and recruit master’s and doctoral students in education. Contribute to the ongoing development of undergraduate and graduate programs. Provide leadership and service at the national, state, and local levels related to English education.

 Salary and Starting Date: Salary will be commensurate with experience. The proposed starting date is August 16, 2023.
