Open Rank Extension Educator – Agricultural Profitability (ENREEC)

Nebraska Extension and the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are seeking candidates for a 12-month, non-tenured Extension Educator position to be located in Eastern Nebraska. They will be supervised by the Program Leader in Agricultural Profitability in collaboration with the Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics. 

The incumbent will be responsible for integrating economic analyses that strengthen farmers’ and ranchers’ strategic and profitability management and marketing decisions. They will be contributing members of an integrated team that will coordinate and teach agricultural profitability programming in Nebraska locally and state-wide to: a) improve profitability and sustainability; b) enhance resiliency to cyclical swings in production input costs and market prices; c) expand producer awareness and confidence in using risk and strategic management tools; and d) assist livestock and crop producers in applying financial management and marketing strategies that will enable them to improve their economic decision making. The incumbent is an active participant in developing solution-based scholarly resources as a member of the state-wide Agricultural Profitability team and a key member of the Center for Agriculture Profitability (CAP). They will work with livestock/crop educators and specialists to assess the financial impact of a variety of crop/livestock production practices and strategies to optimize profitability and improve overall business success. They will also cooperate with multi-disciplinary researchers to develop applied production research, demonstration projects and provide the economic expertise to assess project profitability. Other responsibilities include developing grant proposals and soliciting external funding for partial or complete support of applied research-based and innovative extension programming, and to publish scholarly applied/translational research in scientific journals, extension publications, popular press, and use other media platforms and outlets, like podcasts, webinars, and videos.

In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to serve in, contribute to, or support the Academic Unit and coordinate with administrators and other Extension professionals, on campus and statewide as appropriate, to develop a robust Nebraska Extension presence.

A Master’s degree in agricultural economics or closely related field and the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders in writing, orally, or via online media are required.

Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of the development and use of enterprise budgeting techniques, farm and ranch production recordkeeping, or financial management systems; familiarity with livestock or crop production systems in Nebraska; experience teaching in a formal or non-formal setting, for students, adults, and/or stakeholders focused on the economics of agricultural production; understanding of different ethnic and socioeconomic audiences or a commitment to developing and delivering both inclusive and targeted programming to assist underserved audiences; understanding of or experience of developing and delivering extension programs focused on farm management issues.
