The History Department offers history courses to undergraduate students in a variety of different geographical areas and periods, taught by our twelve faculty members. Our classes are writing and reading intensive with rigorous in-class discussions, and opportunities to participate in hands-on historical research, service-learning projects, and internships. Faculty and students appreciate the small class sizes and close relationships they develop. All of our 80-100 history majors are required to engage in a senior capstone project, a 25-30 page paper based on primary source research and integration of secondary source materials. This rigorous endeavor provides students with the opportunity to learn about, and participate in, a focused area of history. The History Department is strongly committed to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive educational environment, in keeping with DU’s full dedication to these same values.

Position Summary

The History Department at the University of Denver invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level in the history of the Black Diaspora in North America, including the history of African American communities, period open. The start date is September 1, 2023. We are interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion through their teaching, research, and service. This includes candidates from historically underrepresented groups, those who have experience working with diverse student populations, and those with experience and versatility in inclusive pedagogy.

The University of Denver recognizes that its success in being a great university dedicated to the public good depends greatly on how well it engages, supports, and champions the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice. As part of our intentionality in recruiting and retaining faculty from a wide variety of historically excluded intersecting identities, including those from communities of color, with diverse gender and sexual identities, first-generation college graduates, or with disabilities, new faculty will have the opportunity to choose to participate in a University-wide initiative. This initiative will connect new colleagues in a cohort, building community across units with supportive programming led by the Office of the Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs in collaboration with the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and each faculty participant’s academic unit. Essential Functions

The successful candidate will teach a range of introductory- and upper-level courses to history majors and the undergraduate population at DU. The successful candidate will also guide undergraduate theses on a broad variety of topics related to the candidate’s field of expertise. The successful candidate will contribute service to the History Department, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and the University. The successful candidate will maintain an active research agenda consistent with the bylaws of the History Department.

The History Department is proud that our major has grown significantly over the past decade. At the same time, we recognize that we can and need to do more to reach and serve individuals from historically excluded communities. We expect this position will require the successful hire to devote significant time to student advising, mentorship, and, possibly, student outreach. We want to assure candidates that advising and mentoring, like teaching and research, are viewed as central to the work of faculty in our department and are deemed as especially important for this position.
