Overview

The director of undergraduate academic engagement is responsible for offering supplementary academic advising to first-year and sophomore students on an as-needed basis, in partnership with the core residential college advising teams throughout the college system, and in collaboration with other programs within the Office of the Dean of the College. The director of academic engagement works closely with the associate dean for academic advising and the directors of studies in supporting advising programs that build academic community and help undergraduates make informed academic decisions.

Reporting to the associate dean for academic advising, the director of undergraduate academic engagement is also responsible for developing, implementing and supporting innovative advising programs, tools, and communications that encourage undergraduate engagement with the wealth of academic resources available at Princeton. The director takes a leadership role in developing virtual advising platforms and innovative digital communication strategies that can scale up our efforts to support undergraduate students as they navigate their academic paths through a complex curriculum. In addition to developing content for and tracking engagement with key academic advising programs, the director creates and advances an inclusive on-line presence for Princeton's academic advising system.

Responsibilities

The director of undergraduate engagement serves as part of the faculty advising cohort in one of the residential colleges and is expected to master the academic policies that would enable them to supplement or substitute for the advising responsibilities of any director of studies (professional advising staff responsible for first and second year students) in the college system. This responsibility is a small proportion of the position when the colleges are fully staffed, but is the primary responsibility during a staff absence. (This can shift from 20% to 60%)

The director of undergraduate academic engagement is expected to assist with programs that support undergraduates’ successful advancement through Princeton’s curriculum, including summer programs offered by the Emma Bloomberg Center and other summer and term-time programs sponsored by units in the Office of the Dean of the College. For example:

--Support summer enrichment programs and help manage the external course transfer process
--Develop and support innovative academic orientation programs for first-year students
--Advising or teaching assignments with the Freshman Scholars Institute/SIFP
--Support special fellowship programs
--Support the peer adviser program and faculty adviser program
--Collaborate with a wide range of Campus Life partners

The director of undergraduate academic engagement takes a leadership role in developing virtual advising platforms and innovative digital tools that scale up our efforts to assist undergraduates in making informed academic decisions as they navigate a complex curriculum. For example:

--create advising content on digital platforms
--develop content for and manage academic advising website
--develop electronic communication strategies and digital tools for advising communications and processes
--advance an inclusive social media presence
--advising systems liaison with Office of the Registrar

Qualifications

Essential:

Excellent communication and analytical skills
Prior teaching and/or advising experience
Demonstrated competence with digital technologies
Demonstrated project management skills
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a cross-college and cross-campus team
Entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to think creatively and take initiative in a dynamic environment.
Ability to take direction, receive constructive feedback; to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment; and to tolerate ambiguity in a fluid working process.
Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population

Preferred:

PH.D. in a discipline taught at Princeton strongly preferred
Familiarity with Princeton’s academic culture, curriculum, and policies
Experience teaching at the college level
Experience with digital story-telling formats and strategies
