Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Engagement and Volunteerism ( AVP ), the Director of Engagement and Volunteerism will assist the AVP to take a leadership role in building relationships with constituents including alumni, parents, and volunteers, collaborating with campus partners, implementing strategic initiatives to increase engagement and volunteerism, and expanding opportunities for constituents in key regions across the country.

The Director will collaborate with the AVP to create new and existing partnerships with alumni, donors, parents, and student organizations to establish culture of engagement, volunteerism, and ultimately philanthropy to the university.

The Director will also supervise the Parent Engagement Coordinator in the implementation of all parent and volunteer engagement activities, outreach, and programming.

Responsibilities

CAMPUS PARTNERSHIPS AND REGIONAL PROGRAMMING
  • Build strong relationships with a variety of constituents, including alumni, parents, students, and donors.
  • Work with AVP of Engagement and Volunteerism to build strategic partnerships to expand and deepen opportunities for engagement and volunteerism across campus.
  • Regularly communicate and collaborate with key campus partners such as Career Advisors, Directors of Development, and others in departments, schools, and colleges to engage constituents with the Chapman community.
  • Support and advise college and school staff in strategically planning events and activities to engage their alumni, parents, and other constituents.
  • Identify key areas regionally and nationally to grow programming and work in partnership with the Alumni Engagement office, and other departments, such as Career and Professional Development and Admissions, to strategically expand engagement and volunteerism for constituents in regions across the country.
PLANNING, IMPLEMENTATION
  • Oversee the planning and execution of events and activities designed to enhance relationships to increase engagement and volunteerism among alumni and parents.
  • Assist the AVP in planning and implementing organizational strategy, goals, objectives, and infrastructure for campus-wide engagement and volunteer initiatives.
  • Develop and oversee initiatives to ensure volunteers receive recognition and appreciation for their service. In collaboration with colleagues, oversee a variety of marketing and communication efforts, including focus groups, surveys, newsletters, emails, and phone outreach to constituents to foster greater engagement.
  • Ensure constituents have opportunities to provide input and feedback regarding engagement and volunteerism efforts and that constituents’ interests are incorporated when planning programs and initiatives.
  • Ensure effective communication to parents, welcoming them to the Chapman community, providing resources and connections to each other and the campus.
  • Oversee the implementation of parent engagement signature events, strategize on how to create collaboration and synergy with schools and colleges to find opportunities for parents and families to find their own identity and community within the Chapman family.
MANAGEMENT
  • Supervise the Parent Engagement Coordinator in execution of a campus-wide parent engagement program that starts from student matriculation through graduation. Provide support, mentoring, and meaningful feedback to Parent Engagement Coordinator to promote their professional development and success in their role.
  • Provide input to the AVP regarding measurable goals for engagement and volunteerism efforts and work with the Parent Engagement Coordinator and other colleagues to track and achieve goals set forth by the AVP .
  • Oversee volunteer and parent boards to find meaningful ways to align and move department objectives forward, but to also engage volunteers and parents in meaningful ways.
  • Use tools available through UAs CRM database, Affinaquest, and other applicable systems to track progress and inform engagement efforts.
  • Collaborate with the AVP to oversee annual program budget.
  • Keep abreast of best practices for engagement and volunteerism; develop relationships with colleagues at other institutions and professional organizations to learn of new, innovative approaches.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s or Doctorate preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in alumni, student, or parent engagement, advancement, or related experience at an institution of higher education.
  • Management experience with the proven ability to motivate and manage individuals and groups of staff and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated success building strong relationships with a wide range of constituents from diverse backgrounds, including alumni, parents, students, and donors. Experience developing strategic partnerships with departments across campus.
  • Experience planning events and programming of all levels.
  • Experience with board development and management and volunteer engagement and management.
  • Experience developing and implementing marketing and communication plans, targeting various constituent groups.
  • Strong attention to detail, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to critically think and implement strategic initiatives.
  • Strong organizational and management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and exercise discretion and judgment.
  • Strong ability to collect, evaluate, and assess data and metrics to further the goals of the department.
  • Technical skills to learn and use Chapmans CRM database and other systems. Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Ability to represent the University in a positive light, communicate persuasively and passionately to, and collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituencies.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy and to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and other relevant laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Strong commitment to customer service and teamwork
  • Ability to travel locally to meet with Constituents in Southern California and to travel regionally or nationally on occasion, as required.
