Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director of the Engaged Learning Office, the External Engagement Program Manager collaboratively manages activities related to the engagement of external clients in a wide range of School of Information courses and programs. This includes management of the client-based course recruitment plan, client and faculty relationships, data and evaluation, and supervision of temporary student project consultants.

Responsibilities*

Relationship Management (60%)

This role is responsible for understanding the content related to School of Information client-based courses and programs and translating that information to potential clients, with faculty, and across the ELO and broader School of Information curriculum. Responsibilities include:

  • Lead, in collaboration with the Associate Director, relationship development for external engagement, including tracking, developing, and updating strategic messaging; contributing to strategies for the translation of client-based courses requirements to the public and developing a deep understanding of how industry and partner needs are aligned with client-based courses; translating industry needs into recommendations for high-impact practice enhancements related to client-based courses
  • Enhance past client relationships and develop new leads in a wide range of industry types, including corporate, civic, and social service organizations
  • Collaborate with faculty to determine client needs for individual courses; meet with faculty to ensure client-related goals are met, and report goal progress to Associate Director and faculty
  • Travel to build new client relationships
  • Develop and implement partnerships with local business development associations, University collaborators and identify new partnerships to enhance outreach
  • Present on client-based course opportunities
  • Collaborate with UMSI Career Development Office and Development and Alumni Relations
  • Contribute efforts to the management of the UMSI Mentorship Program and serve as a liaison with other offices (Career Development Office and Development and Alumni Relations)
  • Actively participate in External Engagement group and with colleagues across the University

External Engagement Program Management (40%)

A significant portion of this role is to oversee and administer the work of client engagement in collaboration with the Associate Director of Engaged Learning and the External Engagement Coordinator. Responsibilities include: 

  • Manage annual client recruitment and engagement plan, ensuring that the plan is implemented strategically, communicated to key stakeholders, and is adjusted to meet the curricular goals for client-based courses and programs
  • Ensure recruitment plan, project management process, and goals for each client-based course are successfully executed
  • Oversee the Salesforce system used to track engaged learning data and serve as the ELO liaison on the Governance committee
  • Develop new and ensure the maintenance of client engagement resources including UMSI webpages, presentations for client partners, resources for faculty, students, and clients, and collaborative resource efforts between external engagement and ELO related to change management, teamwork, and program management
  • Regularly report progress on goals for each client-based courses and evaluate the engagement experience for clients and students at the end of each semester
  • Supervise team of 4-6 student temporary project consultants
  • Lead student project exposition efforts in collaboration with external engagement coordinator and student engagement program manager

     

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.
  • Minimum of two years of work experience in or related to program management, project management, marketing, consulting, relationship management, or public service
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a diverse range of people from various industries and levels, and a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty
  • Experience working with a wide range of technology, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps products and managing data in complex databases
  • Strong organizational skills with the demonstrated ability to move projects forward, follow up with external stakeholders as needed, and follow through with tasks independently
  • Ability to travel within the U.S. to client sites for project development
  • Ability to manage multiple, competing duties
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal, and facilitation)
  • Ability to work independently, exercise initiative as a critical member of a small team, and function in a dynamic environment; strong desire to contribute to a developing team in the novel field of engaged learning
  • Ability to set expectations and achieve results while contributing to the broader mission of the ELO, the School, and the University

     

Desired Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field (ex: Information, Communications, Public Administration, etc.)
  • Ability to confidently and fluently communicate with academics and external constituents in technical roles and organizations
  • Experience managing marketing campaigns and external communications
  • Demonstrated experience with collaborative cloud-based software and project management technologies such as Salesforce
  • Knowledge of University of Michigan policies and procedures

     

 

Work Schedule

Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required. May require regular regional travel and occasional domestic travel. This role can be hybrid but does require on-site work due to the collaboration needed. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent upon the business needs of the school and/or university requirements.

 

Work Locations

This position will be based in the UMSI Engagement Center, 777 N. University, Ann Arbor.
