The Opportunity

The Department of Chemistry at Colorado School of Mines invites applications for a full-time Teaching Faculty position at the rank of assistant professor. This is a permanent, 9-month non-tenure track position with possibility of additional summer teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to teach general chemistry, and general chemistry laboratory with additional teaching opportunities in upper level courses within their area of expertise (Physical, Analytical, Organic, Inorganic, Biochemistry). We seek candidates excited to share in our mission of addressing the challenges of a sustainable global society by educating the next generation of leading scientists and engineers and expanding the frontiers of knowledge through student centered learning. The Department emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to solving real-world problems in areas such as sustainability, alternative fuels and energy, biodetection, materials, nanomedicines and water quality assessment.

Responsibilities

• Work effectively in a collegial, collaborative, interdisciplinary academic environment both within the Department and across the Mines campus.
• Participate and teach in General Chemistry curriculum including innovating and improving both lecture and lab components.
• Perform service to the department and university through committee involvement, student advising and outreach.
• In the introductory discussions, lead large-enrollment class sessions with active learning pedagogies (e.g., clicker questions, worked examples).
• Contribute to other parts of the Chemistry and/or biochemistry undergraduate and (Applied) Chemistry graduate curriculum.
• Advise and mentor undergraduate students.
• Cultivate and promote an inclusive and diverse Mines community through teaching, recruiting, mentorship, collaboration, and service.

Minimum Qualifications

• A M.Sc. in chemistry or related field by the time the appointment begins.
• Experience teaching in general chemistry courses with in-person laboratory sections and willingness to teach upper level courses in area of expertise.
• A commitment to classroom innovation using inclusive pedagogies and active learning technologies in the classroom.
• Strong commitment to undergraduate education, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as a member of a teaching team.
• Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Preferred Qualifications

• A Ph.D. in chemistry or related field by the time the appointment begins.
• Experience in project-based and/or active-learning pedagogy
• Experience teaching courses in a collaborative team environment
• Experience designing and implementing lab curricula
• Experience in the coordination of multi-section lab
• Experience in the development and presentation of online chemistry courses
• Experience mentoring and working with students with diverse academic backgrounds in instructional settings

Pay Range

Mines is offering an academic year salary of $67,500 - $71,000.

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
